"Roger, Buzzsaw 5105, hold at Rome as published, expect further clearance next week."

It falls under the "can, strongly prefer not to" category.

Especially when the outstation is a maintenance base and they've got the damn part, you've only got one FMS CDU, it takes 20 minutes to fix it, and much of the other butthurt that comes with an inoperative CDU (performance, etc.) can be solved by having an operative CDU.

It's a good thing that I work for the 1000 lbs gorilla in the ATL airspace.

Absolutely. Every time I come back from an extended break it takes me one leg to feel spooked up and on my game. Imagine what it's like only flying every couple months!

God help you if you're part of that first arrival push after I get back from vacation. Expect vectors across final.

Hopefully we get matched up because on that first leg I probably wouldn't notice.

That's a lot of tier 1 applicants that can't fly good.

Of course I spent almost an entire flight today teaching someone with double my flight time what an ODP was....

@Cptnchia if we had our WDR handed down to us at the gate like "y'all" would non-ACARS, it wouldn't be nearly such an ordeal.

Whaddaya mean I can't climb runway heading to 400' then turn on course, and why is the GPWS screaming at me?

At my old company we had a handful of dudes depart straight out from the north runway in DCA.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Which one of your coworkers makes Howard Stern Show references when pilots sound "odd" on the radio? That guy had me and the guy I was flying with laughing for an hour.

And while we're on that, for gods sake if you're flying out of EWR on the EWR2 SID check the SID for SBJ VOR. It's on there. I'm so sick of "proceed direct SBJ direct Biggy/Lanna/Parke on course" and getting "uh we don't have SBJ on our flight plan" as the response! (Unless being given a vector off the SID first means you have to reprogram it, in which case disregard and I'll spread the word on this end)

It was a GA guy looking for flight following. He was having a hard time describing his location so..... Your coworker dropped a "Gary where are you" and then ended with an Eric the actor "bye for now". Maybe it was something you had to be there for but the Gary where are you had us both laughing for a long time.

I think I know who you're talking about. Is his general phraseology terrible and random and ends with "thanks" a lot?

The GA guy or your coworker?

Your coworker sounded as if he knew exactly what he was saying just leaving subtle hints. The GA guy sounded like someone who doesn't fly that much.

I get a lot of vectors on departure that end up being almost (if not) direct to a fix on our flight plan. Is it a controller's personal challenge to see how good your vectors are?

Yes, for some of us. But between knowing where the fixes are and the way our gates are it usually means you'll be within 15-20 degrees of direct regardless. You in the ERJ yet or still the Dash?
