Downturn Survival & Planning

Who says I’m burying my head in the sand?

Let me ask you something. Were you this panicked when SARS and Swine Flu were all the rage? Because I remember back then, those were going to kill us all.

The current media reaction to this is shameful.
Only 8000 people got SARs, Swine Flu killed about 500k, world wide. Those epidemics were also handled fairly competently. This could kill twice that in the US alone... this is a much larger issue.

You can believe that, or not, that's on you. This is much worse than you are acknowledging. Get past your fear of this and start planning for what comes next.

You realize that almost 3 million people die in this country total, every year.

Does that concern you? Do you lose sleep over it? 3 million is a lot of people.

Yes. I'm aware, I think that is higher than it "ought to be," but that's just me. I can't change that number. A 12.5% to 100% increase of that number would be really bad.

While i agree with your math, that argument hasnt soothed anyone on the other side yet, if you find yourself talking to a whackjob divorced of reality it saves you time to just move on and assume others see what you see because the whackjob will never see it.

Wait, who's the whackjob here? If it's me that's fine... but I find that pretty amusing.

Finally tracked down two boxes of 380 auto at a boutique gun store that caters to the goober smoochers. Guy said that today was his best day, ever, and he'd been in that location for more than 30 years. He went on to tell me he was now rationing his inventory to CCW holders only, since those sales are cash and carry, no waiting period.

Fun times.

I submit to you that the only people who can be remotely ready for something like this are the hardcore preppers/survivalists. Being ready for a recession and or job loss with 6 months of living expenses is one thing, but you literally cannot be ready for weeks, maybe months of no income and emerging to an entire world economy that’s in a shambles.

What exactly do ya'll expect the end state to look like?

The virus is here. Worldwide. There is no stopping it. It's here to stay. All these shutdowns, isolations, social distancing, closures, etc, are meant to do only thing: flatten out the curve. That is it. Nothing more. Prolong and buy as much time as possible so we have the beds, repirators, hospitals, docs and nurses to help save the infected. How long does this go on for? Presumably until there is a vaccine. That should fix it, until COVID-21 is found which is a mutated version next year and the vaccine is no longer good. Are we going to go through this entire cycle again?

@SlumTodd_Millionaire i say this with respect, I’ve followed you on JC and even on. FB for a while now. You seem like a smart person, business savvy and somewhat entrepreneurial in your day to day life.

People living in the properties you manage didn’t just lose their jobs from irresponsible decisions, they lost their jobs due to circumstances way beyond their control. Just like this whole situation is way beyond your control, you will fail in getting people to pay rent on time, you will fail in evicting them due to safety nets that will be put in place. This will cause your business to suffer, but not at your fault. This could potentially put your future business in trouble, and maybe at a certain point in time you may be desperate to keep afloat. Would you want those to tell you they hope you get a church to donate for you? Probably not. Just like you tell them there is no excuse to not pay rent, there is no excuse for you to not pull through for the owners to collect that rent. This will be beyond control of you and the tenants you have, and yes even your owners. It is what it is, it will be ugly and you will get burned, your tenants will get burned and so will your owners. It’s a shat Sammie all around...

Again, with respect man, this is bigger than anything we have seen in our lives yet.

I get that. But I got bills due on that house. HOA, property taxes, property management fee, etc.

So they pass rules protecting tenants and the tenants don’t pay. Now what do I do? I have to pay those fees everything month, while they live there for free? That certainly isn’t right either. I got bills. Just as they do. So how about we pass rules that protect the home owner so we can also defer our HOA, property taxes, etc.

This isn’t just a “landlords are devils” and “tenants are innocent because of Coronavirus.”

All we can do is what our clients pay us to do: use every legal means at our disposal to collect the rent. That’s our fiduciary obligation to our clients, and that’s exactly what we’ll do.

And yes, I’m not an entitled little socialist twit, so if a company I owed money to took the time to compile a list of charities who could help, I’d be grateful, not angry.

Best case scenario? In the next month they find antivirals that work and develop an antibody test that determines if you’ve been exposed and developed immunity. Those two developments help keep ICUs clear and get people back into society. Then the virus fades with summer like the flu and we buy more time to test, trace, and isolate.

Worst case? Trump keeps pumping out idiocy and ignites a proxy conflict with an Iran or Russia that’s on edge due to the pandemic.
