Boring Night Cross-Country--the way I like it

Great flight a couple of nights ago. This was the night cross-country required for the PPL. It wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be. Somehow, flying seems more natural these days, and the two previous night flights have even made me feel comfortable at night. I don’t have much to say, because everything went pretty well.

The only interesting part was shutting down after we landed at Lancaster. My CFI said, “Good landing—you also did well with your power management on final.” I added, “Funny, though, that it was so smooth. For some reason I had trouble seeing the centerline.”

“Yeah, well that’s what happens when you have no landing light,” says my CFI.

I hadn’t even realized it was out! I thought back to how I made that landing. I realized that I must have just done the same thing as in the day—look down the runway. I gauged the flare based on those lights coming up.

Well back at BWI, I of course knew that the landing light was out, so I did the same thing. It still worked.

Isn’t it grand?
