Bad form.

H46,
I used to go run under those things and hand the pogo stick to the guys in the helo. That was my favorite part of bringing on the weapons. Nice to see the view from the inside.

H46,

Isn't the Corps the only one of the two services still flying the Frog? I'd heard the Navy no longer uses them?

That is correct. The Marines are the only service still operating them. The USMC is in the process of replacing their's with the MV-22's.

Here's what's left of one of my old rides. Of course you'll recognize it's current home.

Very sad to see! Funny thing, those C-123s in the background? They're in a separate fenced-in compound away from the normal boneyard planes, and each are stenciled "Danger No Entry" on the entry and cargo/troop doors. Word is, that there was remmants of Agent Orange on them, and they're being left out in the sun by their lonesome.

Must be a lot then if they're quarantined like that!

Cool vids...
always wanted to know what a "hell hole" looked like from inside a helo. I only know what I rappelled through in boot.

What does the Navy use now instead of 46's?
Why does the ship have "SPICA" on the back with a Safeway "S" painted with it?

Spica is the ship's name. Most likely the Safeway-style "S" is dues to that ship's mission......a combat stores ship, it's akin to an floating Safeway store.

The Carolinas Historic Aviation Commission has one completely restored. Located at CLT.

The Navy transitioned over to the MH-60S Knighthawk.

I personally hate it. The Navy likes it due to the new capabilities it brings to combat search and rescue and Naval Special Warfare. It's basically the Army version with several structural and upgrades and mods. It can be equipped with 8 Hellfire missiles, four external drop tanks, or 8 ZAU rocket launchers. It's got a glass cockpit and SATCOM w/Datalink capabilites. This aircraft was also going to replace the MH-53 in airborne minesweeping but, Sikorsky is building a new CH-53 aircraft model for the Marines and the Navy is looking into going with that instead.

Coolest flight I ever took was sitting on the open ramp of a 46 strapped in with my legs hanging out for 50 miles up the Queensland coast in Australia. Never more than ~50 ft of the water. I would pay $5000 to have that experience again.
