Funny how when the chips are down, the helo guys become the fighter pilot's best friends.

Does the general rule still apply to those who eject? Ejectees owe a case of adult beverage or a round of drinks to the helo crew, PR's who rigged the chutes and the AME's who inspected the seats.

what about the Data Processing Technicians that entered the maintenance data in the shipboard mainframe?

I only recall having to launch the helo crew once when some dipshlt jumped from the ship, between us and the supply tender, during a full unrep...

what a dumas!

Can't argue with that.

LMAO! I had that happen on my last cruise. Some dirtbag was going to mast and slipped away. The carrier and our ship were in the middle of unrep and vertrep. We were just picking a load when he comes running down the deck to the fantail. He turns, salutes the flag, then jumps! We dropped the load back on the deck and went to go fish him out. He got lucky and didn't get sucked up into the screws. I spotted him bobbing a long in the ships wake. He was easy to spot since he was in his dress whites. We came to a hover and deployed the SAR swimmer. My swimmer told me that we he swam over to him, he was worried because he lost his shoe. As I hoisted them up, he told the swimmer "this is just like being in a recruiting video!" Hahahaha! We laughed at that one for a while. We dropped his dumb butt back on the carrier and turned him over to the eagerly awaiting MA's. He skipped Captains mast and had to stand tall in from of the Admiral!

Oh and no booze for you!

My one fleet rescue was during a Vertrep, too. We were coming around the fantail and saw the carrier's mess cooks throwing the trash overboard. One flung a wooden pallet over the side and his apron got tangled in the pallet. Over he went.

We dropped the load, I told the Air Boss what we saw and that we'd fish him out. The crew rigged for SAR and we hovered around the mess cook, now perched on the pallet that took him overboard.

Just as I was about to deploy the swimmer, he came up and asked, "Do I really have to go in the water, there's sharks in there." Sure enough, there was a school of huge hammerheads chowing down on the garbage. "Lets see if he can get in the horse collar by himself. If he can't, you've got to jump." We dropped the collar into the water (to discharge the static electricity) and towed it over to him. He got in just fine and the crewman winched him up. We dropped him off and went back to work.

And those were some huge, hungry hammerheads. I never faulted the aircrewman for not wanting to jump into the middle of a feeding school of sharks.

This was enroute to Syndey and this dummy wanted out of the Navy. He waited for the worst possible time. We had helos going back and forth and we had all the fuels lines across as well. TO top it off he jumped between the supply ship and our carrier.

And man overboard emergencies suck when you are sleeping and they are for real.....a bunch of guys running to their work stations in their skivvies looking like the walking dead.

This dummy ended up spending his Syndey port call in the brig. I liked how they always put a orange armband around the guys in the brig and they were being escorted everywhere. You just looked and said what were you thinking

Just in case, this video was original aired on Discovery channel, few years back. If my memory serve me correctly, the program was called - aircraft carrier.
