Looks to me like it was an issue with the high speed pass. Maybe flutter causing the control surfaces to break off...

Yeah it was flutter that caused it to break up - you can actually see it happen.

While you can in fact see the flight control flutter, what caused it to break up was impact with the trees.

I once saw a 1/3 scale Extra crash because of radio interference. A guy at the field bought the plane from the R/C scale champion for $25,000. Right after that, he let one of his buddies fly it... he was the one that crashed it...

first flight under new ownership.... last flight for anyone.
