Default You're behind a british airways 767...

... who is about to go transatlantic for London, in a long line of about 40 aircraft for takeoff. Nearing the end of the runway you notice a large plastic bag flying across the taxiway. It inevitably gets sucked into one of the 767's engine and you watch as it gets chopped up and spit out the back, small flames as well. After the "incident" the engine appears to be running normally and the brits don't even seem to notice either, as they don't make any calls over the radio. Do you:

1. Notify over the ground frequency to the 767
2. Ignore it and marvel at the large engines.

Same thing happened to a USAir DC-9 right in from of me in the late 90's. I just reported it to ground and let the chips fall where they may.

He actually got out of line and went lord knows where.

I'd at least let them know they took some FOD in their engine. Worst case scenario they snap at you but I'd sure as hell want somebody telling me if I sucked in a plastic bag.

Ditto. Though our engines have the sucking power of a Dyson Ball, so it's not really an issue. Point still stands.

I think this is pretty straightforward. Tell 'em and let them do whatever they need to do. If you don't, and something happens, well, I wouldn't want to think about that.

I'd take pictures of the flames and post them on Facebook or Jetcareers...

But I'd tell ground trying not to step over anybody over the radio just to let them know what happend. What would you do Sorrygottarunaway?

I have to echo everyone else's choice on the matter. There is no danger in informing the crew of what happened...there potentially could be by not telling them. So, what's the harm in doing so?

I think if you witnessed something there is a duty to report it, even if it might be minor. You'd hate to hear that something happened to the flight and know you could have given them a warning.

We reported it. Then they asked about the size of the bag, if it was a garbage bag. I actually think it came from the IKEA across the way... Speedbird continued uneventfully, responded in a very british "thank you kindly and we're viewing quite normal conditions up here <insert tea slurp>."

Haha love the "stare at the big engines" option. That gets my vote

If you were informed that "what appeared to be a plastic bag" got sucked into your engine what would you do?

Yesterday at SFO the wind was strong and right down the runway and a huge human-sized plastic bag was blowing steadily across the runway. I didn't know who to call and a VX A319 sucked it up within 20 seconds or so finishing up his landing roll. Didn't see any flames or anything but I hope it didn't cause any damage.

Call Airport Ops for something like that.
