My search and rescue flight. I was surprised when I opened my new issue of FLYING (April 2008). There in the On The Record section was the report of an airplane crash that I located. I was called out a little after 9:00 in the eveing to fly a Malheur County Sheriff deputy to the Brogan area to search for a down plane. We had only a little day light left. The deputy was a little late getting to the airport. I was ready and we tookoff and I programed my GPS with the coordinates the FAA had given him as I headed in the general direction. I missed the wreckage on the first pass, as it was at the foot of a steep bluff. I made a 180 and lined the GPS to the heading we had been given and spotted it on that pass. It was almost dark by now so I flew over it again and put a new waypoint into the GPS. They keep me on scene for about 1 1/2 hours while the ground party was trying to find the wreckage. It was as dark as the inside of a black cow. There is also a 6500 ft cottonwood mnt. close by. To top it off I had a terrible gusty crosswind for my return landing at S49.
