| So you're about to load the pax, when your devoutly Christian FO turns to you and says, "Cap'n, I always like to say a short prayer before each flight; let's pray together, shall we?" What do you do? What if your FO were Muslim?

| Old Skool | I'd say he is fine to discreetly pray in anyway he sees fit. I may or may not choose to participate.

| What if he wants the whole crew to hold hands and pray together aloud?

| I'd say have at it...Tell me when you're done. As far as involving the whole crew? Feel free to talk to the rest on the overnight if you want and let them decide on their own, but we're not having a group prayer session on board the plane prior to the flight.

| I wonder what the PAX would think if they saw the crew praying. Maybe it would go something like this. "Hey, What are they doing up there? Do we need to be worried about something if they are praying? Maybe I should get off." ![]() |

![]() In all seriousness, wether you believe in The Lord, Allah or The Force (still waiting for my lightsaber assembly instructions to show up by the way) let the FO or the Capt. make a callout to the Head Office as he/she sees fit as long as it doesn't interfere with the safe operation of the flight. It's better to ask for help before the before start, because you know you'll be asking for help if something happens later on... remember: "calls will be answered in the order that they are received." You don't have to participate, but a persons religious beliefs are integral to their life and it's just good CRM to keep the lines of communication open in the cockpit.

| Agent Smith | This would be so far outside of the cultural norm at my airline, I'd probably give him a speech about presuming that everyone else is in a compatible religion and why he hasn't conducted the preflight yet.

| See if you can get tower to link all the planes in the pattern for a group chant first. ![]()

| This habit would probably die before the guy hit the line off IOE.

| Agent Smith | I've got to ask. Is this a hypothetical or an actual event? I know some ultra-religious people and I think even they'd know better.

| If the FO felt like he needed to pray before the flight, by all means, have at it. If he felt that the whole crew needed to be included, I'd have to say that he needs to keep that to himself. Peoples' religions are a personal matter. I make it point when I fly to not talk about 2 things...God or the government. Makes things slightly more harmonious. |

| I reckon I'm as religious as the next guy, I am from Utah so you can guess what that means, and I also reckon I have ample opportunity to pray BEFORE I am sitting in my assigned seat, I can pray on the drive to the airport, riding the shuttle, walking the terminal, even doing my preflight I could stop for a quick word(as long as the TSA doesn't see me) I see no reason to try and drag my coworkers into a prayer with me. That said, if it came up on a 4day that my coworker was of the same religious affiliation and they wantted me to participate, I don't think I would mind. Nor would I be offended if someone of any religion wanted to have a quick moment. ESF if you want to call on the name of satan, then giddyup, I'll still fly wit ya, but I will have my seatbelt on extra tight!
