| Old Skool | I still think the best chapelle's show was the one where he wondered what it would be like if the internet was a real place.

| All very nice, but what if your on a TransAtlantic and there's no airports for some time? |

| Junior Member | Find the nearest airport! There are options on transatlantic, such as Greenland, Iceland, or those islands that I always forget the name of, ahh dammit, where the Air Transat landed. You just can't continue with your captain like that, he needs help and he needs it fast. Also ask in the cabin if anyone is a doctor! Wise thing to do. |

| Senior Member | as my awnser to the question: i would get him off the controls. fall the FA. declare an emergency and while decending. do as much as i could, as the pilot, to assist the captain. the FA would be there helping also. i know from experiance, that it could not be the food. he could have a very low blood sugar and passed out from that. "get him an oj FA". if he was kind of awake... |

| Just some thoughts. First of all you are not sure what caused the captains incapacitation so you have to assume it could be anything. First thing, put on your oxygen mask and establish communications with ATC, informing them of your situation and declaring an emergency. If oxygen deprivation or airborne agents caused the problem with the captain you certainly don't want to be exposed to the same problem. Get help immediately from any available resource and get the captain out of the way. Your responsibility now as PIC is not the captain, it is the safe operation of the flight until it's conclusion. Your number one priority is to safely fly the plane. Get a FA upfront and tell him or her what you want done. Have them check for pilots in the back as well as medical personnel and have the FA inform the passengers that the capt is ill. You haven't got time to do that. You have declared a medical emergency and you are proceeding to the safest, not necessarily the closest airport. Stay in the FO seat as that is the seat you are most comfortable sitting and landing in. Stop the airplane on the runway centerline and make it accessible to the medical personnel by shutting down engines, setting the brakes and whatever else your particular aircraft requires. Take time to slowly think about what needs to be done as decisions made in haste are often wrong. Hopefully the captain will recover from whatever put him down and he will buy the beer on the next layover.

Not necessarily. You are making a dangerous assumption and a diagnosis. All the possibilities need to be considered. Your first priority is the safety of the flight. Take steps to make sure that your personal well being is preserved (there are no contraindications to oxygen administration) then work for the safety of the flight. Get medical attention for the CA when you can. Maybe there will be a blonde anesthesiologist on board?

| I would call the FA and have her bring me a sharpie. I would then write the word "wanker" on his forhead. I would then proceed to land in Iowa, have my old school homeboys come pick me up, and while at the bar call crew support and demand captains pay for that leg. I don't think it would be a huge deal unless my Bose QC2's battery ran out and I would be forced to use the hand mike.
