i hope the new prices on the website are either a joke or a misprint.

It's been tough for me just working here in Korea trying to save up money for the last 2 years while I have seen ATP's price increase $10,000, Ari-Ben at least $5,000, Skymates and now White Air.

This is the dilemma that I face though with trying to offset the amount of loans that I need. I could start training right now, but I'd use all of my savings and have nothing to live on. I'm trying to build a cushion so I don't have to take out any loans and can afford to live fairly comfortably for at least 6 months-1 year.

I have been saving towards returning to school too and am having trouble understanding the recent price increases. Other than inflation all the other variables seem to have remained constant over the past year so such large increases appear out of whack. I was seriously considering white air because of the niche market they seemed to have created for themselves with a small school set in a unique location that allowed for a cheaper tution. With white airs price increase they are no lareger competitive against other schools for me. I should still meet my goals of returning to school without taking out a loan, but working part-time for living expenses appears like it will be necessary.

and the margins are getting smaller. Fuel is getting out of control. When fuel hits 7 or 8 a gallon which is very likely be ready to see these schools top 100k.

flywhiteair.com is the web add. Yeah it looks like the prices went up-(

To add to this--it seems like your local FBO may be the way to go.With a dedicated instructor you could do it for a decent price and a good time frame.

ATP has gone up 25k in the time since I've been planning on going. I decided to get school out of the way first, which I think was smart but it's hard to see all that.

WhiteAir still isn't SO (relative, relative) horrible as far as cost, it looks like things went up about 6k. I just hope I don't get priced out entirely of flying soon.

It's not horrible, but for those of us trying to save up money it really stings. Just when I thought I was coming closer to my goal of savings, I find out that I've gotta shell out another $5,000, which sets me back at least a few months. The longer I wait though, the higher the price will go. I guess I gotta pick up some more part time jobs

Fellas, what's the deal? If you're saving up money, why bother doing a career program when all you need to do is get out your FAR/AIM, go down to the FBO and knock out your ratings one by one. You're going to find it will cost you half or less than what these places charge. I'm not trying to start a pro/con argument, but if you have the cash, spend it wisely. The academies know this one very important fact: they have a captive audience. Folks who need a ton of financing, like 30k or better, can only go to their schools because they are the only ones who are accredited and actually have financing programs in place to help you out. Plus, being young, most of us want to get all the ratings knocked out ASAP and start using them, for me instructing is what I want to do, but for most you want to get on to a regional before the boom is over. So, these programs will continue to raise prices because a lot of folks CAN'T go the FBO route because we all know pilot finance is crap for that sort of thing. So, they know you aren't going to want to spend 3 years doing construction to save up cash (like I did by the way), they know you'll spend the money on them and their higher priced product because they know you have to to get where you want to be sooner, which is flying airplanes. Training now is like going to Six Flags and trying to eat or drink something-$6 for a small Ice Tea, $24 for a medium cheese pizza. Captive audience folks, what else you gonna do?

P.S Don't think for one second you and a good cfi can't knock out your ratings just as fast as ATP and anyone else.

P.P.S Anyone want to lobby AOPA to help get federal funding for future pilots? You know, FAFSA stuff for FBO's. That would really cut into the prices. That, or someone coming up with a good loan program geared towards ratings.

And just one more little thing, you guys might want to check out the local Cessna Pilot centers around your area. A lot of them have signed a deal or are eligible with Sallie Mae to provide financing for all their ratings, individually or otherwise. This could be a much cheaper way to get where you're going.

A lot of great points.

The problem for me is financing, there just aren't many options for the smaller flight schools.

I've already been on JC four years deferring my dreams for college, I don't really think I can handle another 3 saving up money (which is near impossible with my income/expenses..)

If only I could do that from Korea. I tried for 8 months to join the Civil Air Patrol from here so that I could get access to the Air Force base and become a member of the flight club. Since that didn't work, the only thing I can do is continue to save. If I made the same amount of money in the States that I do here then I would be going to an FBO and getting everything done right now, rather than saving everything up, only to spend it at once.

White Air made a smart move.

It is pretty obvious that people are willing to pay $40K+ for career programs. They are a for-profit organization. If they didn't have the enrollment, they'd likely not have done it.

Just biz in America, baby!
