| I'm a junior in high school and am considering attending UND. I got my PPL last August. I was planning on starting my instrument training at my FBO but I just found out that if I get my instrument rating I would have to retake the whole thing at UND. Should I just get my instrument rating and the rest of my certificates at the FBO instead or should I wait and get my flight training at UND? What do you guys sugest? |

| Junior Member | Its all about what you put into it. I personally liked the UND program even though there are some outdated polices it still is a very good program. But going part 61 for your ratings is a good way to go but you will have to work at it. If you want to take a career to the airlines or to a large corporate flight department it might be difficult going the part 61 route not so much that you wont get good training but rather getting a foot in the door may be harder where as UND we have Alumini that help put the foot in the door for ya so when the time comes to get a job you still have to work but you dont have to work so hard that you get frustrated. If you are looking at a career of professional instructing UND will provide you a great proving ground to do that. Part 61 world can do the same but like I have said will require alot of work and finding your customers. Hope this helps and PM me if you have any questions. -Farva

| I'd recommend using the search feature if you haven't already to find a ton of opinions on this subject. It all comes down to personal preference though. If you chose to attend UND's aviation program you'll have to go through a private pilot test course (which includes taking the private pilot ground school with the rest). You'd have to take a test course for the instrument/ other ratings too if you come into the program with those already. There are a ton of pros/cons for attending a FBO vs. UND (or other school) and visa versa. Totally your choice. I came to UND, did my flight training here, and instructed here as well. It was a great fit for me. I recommend coming to visit the school to see for yourself if it’s what you want. |

| Senior Member | Do it all at the FBO... UND won't give you an instrument rating for a looooong time...

| Keep in mind the flight time requirements to get your commercial too... UND is a part 141 school, so you can get your commercial at 190 hours. Part 61 requires 250 hours of total flight time. So, you may have to "wait" to get your commercial multi instrument ticket after completing your multi course here at UND, but you'll do it in less flight time... |

| I'd highly recommend going the FBO route if you already have your private. Do NOT go to UND in your situation. You will also spend an arm and a leg to go there now that they dramatically raised their prices exponentially since I started there. Even though you can get your CSMEL-Instrument in 190 hours instead of 250, you'll still pay more money through the laptop program, various program fees, and the higher fees spent on UND airplane rental and flight instructor fees. |

Do what interests you. If you're interested in something else, it really isn't too tough to do a second major/minor (I can't speak for it myself, but have many friends that have done it). As for how long will it take?... It can be done in 4 years or less. Do you want to spend the summers up here taking classes, or taking bigger credit loads? Enjoy it though - college is a great time! ![]()

To each his own. Scholarships and such can decrease some of the cost . The added structure of the program adds some benefit too for most.

| do a flight record report for your entire COM course under aims(select every single block), look at the bottom at the deficiencies. if you are short anywhere you will need to do more time, if not you are good to go AFAIK

| Someone just said something they knew little about. The hour requirement to get a commercial under 141 is determined is agreed upon by the FAA and the institution. Most people at UND who do fairly well and don't fly other places will come in under 190. Go by what the TCO says and you'll never have a problem. |
