IAH is about 25 minutes north of Downtown. Doesn't really matter though because rent in the good areas of downtown/midtown aren't affordable on a FO salary. I live near Hobby Airport and rent is cheaper, but if I want to do anything like go out, hit up a mall, etc, I'll be driving. |

Whatever happend to flying for the first place to hire you? Am I that f*&king old? Dudes seriously.... they are great companies.... but stop predicting where you will end up in life.... happiness is found in the adventure to that point in time---- not just in reaching your goal. And stop instructing at UND! There are better places to go where the women (or men whatever your case may be) will actually appreciate the fact that you are a pilot! ![]() Baker...... still waiting on that resume..... when are you going to finish 325?

Keep on living the SJS dream.... of course there isn't anything wrong with aiming for the good companies but I was addressing the fact that this person was basically telling us that he/she was going to said regionals and made no mention of being grateful of working for anyone (with a decent contract..... a contradiction I know) who would hire him. Y'all are living in the UND bubble and have no effing clue what it is like outside of that realm. Take it for what it is.... my opinion.... and remember that girls in much bigger cities ie. Houston, DFW, and Austin are way better than those in GFK. End of story.

Whatever, I guess I have SJS, and I'm a wuss from the UND bubble because I would rather make informed decisions about the career I worked (and am working toward) hard to attain. Sounds like you have some growing up to do.

And, on the subject of the "UND bubble," I would just like to know what people are really even talking about when they use that phrase. It just sounds like the "cool" thing to say. So you want to land on a grass strip? You want to transition through Bravo airspace? Etc, etc? Yeah, well nobody is stopping you. No bubble there. Ok so the airplanes are extremely well-maintained, and they have awesome avionics in them. If pilots out there don't know how to navigate without GPS or whatever, then that isn't UND's fault, ok? For the money we pay to go here, I expect nothing but the very best equipment in all of the airplanes, and that's pretty much what our spoiled asses get. OMG, so you have to jump through a bunch of hoops if you want to go on a really long cross-country? Wow, well if you were anybody with any authority wouldn't safety and the practicality of "Gee, what would happen if a plane broke?" be an issue of concern to you too? You have to earn your priveleges. The people in charge aren't doing these kinds of things just to be jerks. I could go on and on, but seriously, who cares (yeah, Gnarls Barkley)? The "bubble" is a complete fabrication, if you ask me. Please, if you can, show me otherwise. |

But aside from instructing at UND.... flying elsewhere does have its advantages.... both in a social format and in interviewing. I do not believe that I can make myself look bad by screaming that UND kids have SJS.... and if you don't believe that they do maybe you should take a hard look at the past and what people had to do to get themselves into a jet. I do have some growing up to do.... as do a lot of people.... but I am not depending on UND to supply students for me so that I can make the jump from instructor to FO. I don't want beef.... and I think that conversing on this forum skews both of our words.... I think a lot is said by not staying at your alma mater and making your own path in life. To each his own..... I will not crap on anyone else's parade tonight as I am about to go out and have fun. BTW... not to start another debate.... has anyone at UND experienced losing an engine in a twin without counter rotating props?

As for stepping outside of UND to instruct after school, I agree that a lot can be said for that, but more just because it can definitely be a big step into a new unknown. However, I see no relation to that being about what school you are a product of, but more about your own personal decisions to explore a new frontier, if you will. EDIT: I also see your point about the bad attitudes that come out of here, but that's really just the name of the game with a great program combined with kids that just don't know anything else. These types of people are just spoiled, but I honestly haven't seen anybody like that on these forums, either. You just don't really see those types of people on here. I see more (on here, at least) about how people step out of the "bubble" and go fly, and all of a sudden UND is just a big no-fun umbrella, and that's not necesarilly the case for many many reasons.

I think people who don't have plans on how they plan achieving things are the ones f----d more than any others. Life is always full of plans, and those plans are ALWAYS changing but it's always good to have them. I do agree, and I've always preached that you cannot be so set on one route as it will only stress you out more and you won't enjoy life, but c'mon, you need a plan. Don't just wing life when you're $xx,000 in debt. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt because I know you and don't think you were making it a personal attack (at least I would hope not).

No.... No personal attack at all.... I think I am a little misunderstood. I understand that everyone must make their way in life.... your adventure through aviation is your own and no one elses. I guess I am fortunate enough to have been able to pay my way through UND as I went..... I must cut this short as I have two delicious looking latina women at the door but I ran into a UND kid three days ago at an airport who, upon seeing my UND ID lanyard started talking to me and relayed that he would be working for CAL in less than 3 years. Now this kid is younger than me and (at least I hope) more full of ###### than I am but I will leave this point with y'all. UND made me into a pilot.... now I am making myself into a professional.... everyone must do it for themselves at some point..... and for those exculsive few that feel that jobs are owed to you..... GO F*&^ yourself! I have nothing but love for the rest...... good luck with your endeavors..... it looks like I am about to embark on one of my own! BTW.... Angel.... you and Saner have been hanging out way too much.... you need to get your a$$ down to TX dude..... put your spanglish to use bro!

I trained in Portland so... Portland Bubble = Comfort zone... No matter where you go to school you will be in that bubble which is your comfort zone... So its probably a good idea to step out of the bubble regardless where you are. I have enjoyed flying at UND so far, although I do critisize a lot of policies and such... But regardless, I have enjoyed flying.

I've heard that some of the people who come up with the policies have no flight experience and flight background so that would probaly contribute to some of the weird policies. They are in place for good reasons anyway and I'm sure they have good reasoning behind them. |

I think all SOPs are in place from previous occurences. You'll notice that after the crash in the summer of 2004 when the student fell asleep in his x-country, a lot of safety policies have been implemented. Honestly, a lot of the policies are very limiting in what you can do, but I think some students do need them. It just takes one accident or even incident to "ruin" it for everyone else.

I don’t know where you’ve heard that from, but I wouldn't believe that. I’d venture to guess that these people making SPP’s have some experience.

you cant make policies/rules to govern good decision making.
