| Hi all! If you don't mind, I have a few questions to ask you North Dakotans about life at UND. But first, a little background on me: I'm a soon to be 21-year-old college junior from Oshtemo, Mich., (near Kalamazoo), majoring in communication studies. I have my private pilot license and about 100 hours of flight time. I earned my license from a local FBO, but I've flown in both part 141 and 61 programs. I plan to pursue a career in the aviation industry, hopefully as either a freight dawg, corporate pilot, or career CFI/aviation professor at a university . I'm considering transferring to UND next fall (2008) to finish my comm. studies degree and pursue flight training, as well as possibly pursuing a masters in aviation after I graduate. I know the popular opinion on this board is to avoid the major aviation universities and train at an FBO, but I have found that I prefer training in a more structured part 141 setting, and it is also easier to get financial aid for flight training when it's connected with a university. I have already read UND's website and got most of the flight program info. and tuition/fee info from there. My main questions for you guys center around QOL and life at UND and in the city of Grand Forks. So, here they are: 1) How good is the weather for flying during the winter? I know in Michigan we get many rain and snow cancellations due to the lake effect, which is bad for flight training. 2) Is financial aid easy to work with, and do they understand the needs of avia. students? I know Fin. Aid at my current school is a nightmare. 3) Is GFK really as bad as they say it is? I love the small town atmosphere, but from what I've seen from lurking on this forum and elsewhere, it seems bad. Is that just city boys complaining or does it really suck? Is there much to do around there? 4) Is it possible to finish flying in 1-2 years, or does it always take four years? I will be a senior if/when I enroll. 5) Is staying in the summers necessary? I know at most aviation schools students stay for the summer, but I would like to get back to MI during break if at all possible. 6) What is the best place to live in GFK? I don't want to live in the dorms or university apts., and I would prefer being away from the campus area because of noise, break-ins, etc.). Thanks for your responses. A lot of people may say that it's better to go the Part 61 route, for a number of reasons. Less expensive, no "bubble", whatever. I've done both Part 61 and Part 141, and, at least for me, UND was the best decision I could have made. I don't think I could've gotten as good of an education anywhere near where I used to live. Also, I'm one of those weird people that actually enjoys the cold and the college town atmosphere, so that helps too. It is, however, expensive (I'm on my senior year, and I'm expecting to end up in the $105,000 range at the end of it all). Like I said before, it is what you make of it. Good luck! | ||||||

| Honestly if you want to come to UND and major in communications and minor in Pro. Flight that would be one of the better ideas i have heard. I would come asap though as if you want to make it through all the flight training before you graduate you need to be here now. you will have to take 112 (private test course), 221, 222, 323, 325, and 414 if you want cfi, 415 for cfii. so that is 7 flight labs, you can't be enrolled in more than 1 at a time (read per semester). i see a minimum of 2-2.5 years (staying for summer as well!) ahead of you to do the flying at UND
