Hey! I'm going to be a freshmen next year at UND. I'm starting to prepare things for next year and was wondering if there was any bank you guys could recommend or any you would steer clear of. None of the banks in Grand Forks and have branches anywhere near where I live in Michigan. Any info would be appreciated. I was looking into these banks: a) Wells Fargo b) Alerus c) US Bank d) Gate City e) Bremer Thanks a ton! Evan |

Back in the day I used Alerus, when it was called something different that I don't remember anymore. I never had any problems with them. In hindsight, I'd probably use US Bank, just because they have a large network. I know that doesn't help you any, but it could be convenient when traveling.

Yeah, Wells Fargo is no good. There aren't many good alternatives up here though. I think US Bank is better though. They don't charge you a bunch of random fees like Wells Fargo does at least.

US Bank has the NWA Check Card that you can use to earn miles... use online bill pay for your rent/mortgage/car payment/massage therapist/nose job/lawsuit judgement/etc... and you'll rack up the miles really fast. | |

If your current bank already has online bill pay/free checking/internet bill pay/etc. why not just stick with them? I kept my current bank when I went up and since my parents use the same bank, they can just transfer money into my account anytime I need to put the money in the aviation account. |

I used Bremer and like it. Many Bremer ATMs around campus in the Union and Wilkerson so if you live in the dorms it's easy to get money out with out all those extra fees. I did join that Campus Credit Union on campus but it was just a pain so I closed it.

Gate City I switched from WF and loved Gate City, great service, very friendly, really good intrest rates (especially on the money market). I wish they were everywhere. my bank now (First Hawaiian Bank) sucks, plus Gate City has cool gifts for signing up! |

you know of all those banks, once you leave the midwest there aren't any of them. So you're gonna have to switch to something else once you leave.

Alerus, Gate City, and Bremer are only in the midwest. US Bank and Wells Fargo seem to be almost everywhere in the US, including the west coast. But I know that Wells Fargo does not have a very large presence in the east coast... if at all. I'd recommend getting into a bank that you can access when at home. Edit: According to Wikipedia... Alerus Financial: ND and MN Gate City: ND Bremer: ND, MN, and WI |
