Can't wait to take do some time-lapse photography of building CB clouds and long exposure shots to capture lightning

Yep, I heard the first thunder about 30 minutes ago and then saw some lightning flashes. To get lightning pictures do the professionals use long-exposure or do they just use normal picture lengths?

It would require reflexes of 0.0000000000000001 milliseconds You just use a long exposure depending on what kind of shot you want and how many lightning bolts you'd like to add to one shot... it also depends on how active the lightning is. It's pretty difficult to capture a lightning bolt on a still camera in the daytime unless you have several shots one after another and you set the camera to around 1/6 of a second of exposure (and maybe 50 ISO and a smaller aperture like f/8.0) to allow for a higher chance of a lighting bolt falling in between that 1/6s time frame. I've never tried it this way but I'm assuming how that's how it'd be done if you were to try it at pre-dusk hours. It's very easy at night...just leave the camera on a tripod with the shutter open for 10-15 seconds and see what you get.

Wow the thunderstorm pics look really great! Wish I was that great with the camera. I guess I'll have time to practice when I get to GFK.

the months between october and april when you arent doing any flying should allow you plenty of time to pick up new hobbies.
