Default Hey car dorks!

Quick question for you. Today on the way to work my windshield got hit by a rock and now I have a 9 inch crack in it. I called the insurance and filed a claim and all that, but with my $500 deductable, I'm gonna have to take care of all this myself. I have an '06 Impreza 2.5i (non wrx). Any idea about how much to expect to have the windshield replaced? This is the first car I've had that is worth getting something like this replaced, so I don't have a whole lot of experience in the matter.

Muchos gracias.

Joe... I would see if you can get the exact windshield repaired. Short cracks like that can be repaired and filled with resin. I had small rock chips filled on my old Honda. It worked great... but I never had the unfortunate window crack.

This website says 12 inch cracks can be repaired now with current techniques:
http://www.carmarket.com/Windshield.cfm

Edit: Oh... I doubt your windshield replacement cost will be cheaper than your deductible but maybe I'm mistaken. I'd guess it'd cost $600-800 for a windshield replacement?

You know, this is one thing I also have no experiance with. My advice is to do what I'd do with any other body work and go to 3 shops to get estimates, and pick the one in the middle. This is definitly something you want to do right. It is for sure something I would never try on my own. To put it into perspective on how easily this is to do horribly wrong, I'd do an engine swap, do my on metal related body work, even rebuild a differential, maybe even rebuild the top end of an engine on my own, but I would never try to put a windshield in myself.

So I'd go to 3 reputable glass shops and pick the middle estimate.

I'm sure others will have other advice and I recommend you get more information from other people before you act, but soon enough so that the crack doesn't get any bigger if it can be fixed. Sorry I can't help you out more, I just don't much experiance with this particular repair.

Every pickup that we have owned, the windshield has been hit by rocks and cracked. I'm not sure what the exact prices were as they weren't my cars (my parent's), but I know it's more than a few hundred dollars. Lots of gravel roads, so it's kinda expected to happen eventually. Just go get some estimates and not get screwed over.

My windshield cracked on my truck but I got it replaced under warrenty since it was in the very top left corner and appeared to have cracked from the inside.

I replaced the windsheild in my dodge a couple years ago - it came out to a bit over $200.

Glass is covered under my insurance – no deductible for it.
