Default Crystal Sugar

"Dear Lovely Grand Forks Residents,

While we make every effort to ensure that our sugarbeet operations don't make the entire town smell like ass, we don't care one bit that it will. We will be processing a large amount of crop this year, so please expect to breathe out of a gas mask from now until the end of July. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Sincerely,
Crystal Sugar"

/\ What they really meant to say.

Anyone else get this type of letter in the mail? I guess they were right. Sounds like a little bit of shady PR action to defer the complaint letters coming in.

You should smell the Potato runoff ponds. I would rather go swimming in the sugar beet ponds any day!

Yeah it's just a PR stunt they pull to prevent you from calling in to complain about the odor.

Oh, and these "race cars" I keep hearing off of Gateway. It's nearly 11PM. What happened to Grand Forks and their whole noise regulations?? I don't want to hear cars all evening.

Redneck racing. LOL ...I think it'd actually be kinda fun to screw around on the track with a RWD steel chassis made in the backyard

This is actually pretty entertaining to watch and it doesn't get as old like other forms of oval track racing because the races are so short. The real question is, can you ignore the rest of the potentially annoying people in the stands. Sometimes I really can't.

Yeah, no way does it deserve to be called "racing". It's crude, unrefined, and falls into the same category as Monster Truck "racing".

But for screwing around for fun (not racing) I think it'd be fun. Otherwise... calling it real auto racing is invalid.

Come on Jason, that's silly. While I hate oval racing as much as you guys, it's still racing. Everyone's trying to cross the finish line first. So...

I don't know about "unrefined", old school, yes, but I wouldn't call it unrefined persay. The engines at least.

I'm mostly just playing devil's advocate to you because I like stirring #### up.

After some digging, I found this map on the Simplot™ Website. I'm not sure if they want the public to know about this. They collaborate with the Lagoon Corporation™ and Ryan Potato™ to formulate the ideal distrubution pattern for fecal coliform over the Grand Cities.

Whoever zoned this city were likely some of the most incompetent of people.

First they decide to make the University into a huge rectangle right next to a train yard with nothing but houses surrounding it. This cuts it off from the "downtown" area shops and somewhat nicer areas of Grand Forks (like along the river) adding to the completely disjointed feel of the city and total lack of involvement in the community. Then they decide that putting some of the worst smelling factories right in the city is somehow conducive to increasing their resident's standard of living. I mean, almost everyone dreams of being a potato fryer at Simplot for the rest of their lives, RIGHT, RIGHT?

I mean North Dakota sucks, but Grand Forks could be a lot nicer if they actually tried to encourage diversity and wouldn't pass up certain opportunities...according to my Anthropology teacher, Cirrus originally wanted to build their headquarters in GFK, but the city didn't want it since it meant scary outsider peoples invading their town! Of course, that only lasted until they decided to just go to Duluth, then they sort of realized the missed opportunity.

The last 2-3 days, the lagoon smell has been blowing right over campus. Always fun to walk outside and smell it right away.

No kidding. I can't think of a single factory in my home town that is anywhere close to having it's "smells" upwind in the prevailing winds from the city. This damn town has EVERY factory upwind in the prevailing winds from the city. Good idea! I can't even fathom the stupidity of the person that decided this.

nail on the head.

way to segregate a wonderful resource away from the rest of your town and minimize any positive economic or social impact they could possibly have. (re: the university placement)

Did you know that Columbia overpass wasn't built until 1981? Without it, in order to get to anywhere south of the railroad tracks, you had to navigate your way east into downtown, then south through residential neighborhoods and S Washington, then finally back west to Columbia Rd. What a crap way to plan a city!
