Default Flight Sim X

I recall reading something about the Flight Sim games on here somewhere but can't find it now. I talked to the Helpdesk people and they said we were supposed to get FSX around Spring Break, but are still shopping around for the best vendor. Now I'm thinking of just going out and buying the game myself, but I've heard that a super-fast computer is needed to play the game. Do any of you own the game and will it run on our aviation laptops? Should I just stay with the 2002 version or buy the 2004 version instead and wait until the department gives us copies of X?

I think you absolutly need Vista to run it at all halfway decent. I think the laptop hardware is fine for running it, if the OS is Vista. (I have only seen the specs, I don't have an aerospace laptop.) When I run FSX on XP I have everything on the lowest setting, and only use it on XP for instrument practice. ie: ILS, missed approaches and holds. When I run FSX on Vista I am actually able to enjoy the scenery.

As for upgrading from FS 2002 to FS 2004, I think the changes were weak and it wouldn't justify spending the money to buy FS 2004.

Ask TXaviator - he tweaked around with his laptop in order for it to run on XP.

I havent had major problems getting it to run nicely on XP.
I have to trade off scenery for nice looking planes, but It runs well 90% of the time, and my PC is only mid-end now.

im running around 30-40fps on the standard aviation laptop at 1024x768 with really pretty good scenery (most settings on 'medium')

a LOT of cfg tweaking is required however, and you absolutely MUST upgrade your graphics drivers (which are a huge pain in the ass thanks to dell/nvidia crippleware)

as far as buying it........i wouldnt know
