Default First time flyer

So would you guys reccomend the day after graduating high school that I come up there and take aviation 102? Anybody do this? Is it worth it? How did you get signed up for it? What is your free time like? Do you just have 1 flight a day and some classes? I am looking for some advice here. Thanks everyone. I heard about this opportunity in some posts a few months back but didnt receive that much feedback. Any information would be awesome. I already contacted the school and man was that bad. They couldn't give any helpful information for a prospective student except that it would cost around 8k or something with room and board. I dont know if that is accurate but it seems a little high priced.

If you have decided UND is for you then do it. You will be mountains ahead and have great weather to fly in. Just be prepared to work hard depending on who you get. What ever you do, do not take the class from a teacher whose last name starts with the first letter of my user name. Call back in early April to try to get more information.

If your up for it, I would defidently recommend it. The weather is usually nice, and you'll get a good head start on your flight training. One thing to keep in mind though is that the private pilot class is 5 credits. Squeeze that into 9 weeks and your talking about class four times a week (i believe, dont quote me on that) for at least two hours a day plus a lesson. You will fly monday-saturday at the very least to stay on schedule. I never did the course, but if your motivated it sounds like lots of fun. Just remember to study, the course ends quick!! Let us know if you need anymore information.

about two weeks after i graduated i was at UND doing 102. it was nice to get ahead and the fact that i had a guaranteed spot in 102 for the summer was good. i could graduate in 3 years (that included 3 summer sesions) but i am looking at doing an internship so i will be here until fall of 07. i came up spring break of my senior year to check out und then i decided to sign up for classes. took 102 and intro to atc over the summer. spent a lot of time studying, but also had time to do stuff with friends. it was tough doing it in the summer but when it was over you were ahead of the game. i did all my class regitering with aerospace student services. I took 102 with the person mentioned earlier and made it through fine.

I am up at UND currently enrolled in 102. although I am not taking it in the summer semester, it has been a WONDERFUL experience so far! The instructors know their stuff, and everyone i have encountered in the aviation community have been happy to answer questions of any sort. I have wanted to be up here for quite some time, and I have no regrets. Do you have any idea what you would want to do with your PPL once you get it? any idea what your major will be? I can tell you that the average cost for a 102 student is about 9K. that includes ground school, and the flying. Living and other regular college expenses are on top though. The 9k price is not set in stone, it is all about how efficient you are in getting the course done, it is ONLY an average. Do you have any previous flying experience? or would this be your first time flying? It is also a very structured program, which in my opinion i think is a fantastic way to teach because I always know what's ahead of me!!

My grand total for 102 was $6500. I think I actually saved money by doing it over the summer just because of the frequency of the lessons...it all stayed fresh in my mind!

I did 102 in the Spring semester of 04, and got it done in $7000. It IS a more expensive course than many of them, but it doesn't have to be ridiculous. I hit the books really hard in 102 cuz I was so excited to fly, and I think it really paid off both in flight cost and helped with other courses down the road.

I think that is a bit presumptuous. I had the same teacher and I thought he did a great job. I ended up getting an A in the class. Teachers have different teaching styles and they work for different people. He might have a great experience while you didn't. Most of the guys I know from that class that are in 221 now thought he was a great teacher and we still say "sugar beats".

Do not get me wrong. I am not saying he is a bad teacher. Just a very intense one. His class would not be the one I would want to be in if I was taking it over the summer. He moves at a fast pace to begin with. Great job on getting that A.

I agree with you there. I wouldn't want to have his class every day. It took a lot of work just to keep with 3 times a week. 221 is fine because it is twice a week with the ragin' cajun'. Not a whole lot of work involved in that class.

I have him for advanced aerodynamics right now. He's alright I guess. I had Trapnell for 323 and he was amazing. I wanted him for advanced aero, but he quit teaching all of his class from what I can tell. He's still here so he must be doing research or something. The Z man's alright, but Trapnell is way more knowlegable.

Trapnell will be back - agreed that he is amazing. He's off working with the UAV studies and implementation at the base for the time being.

Trapnell is definitely more knowledgable.

Agreed. True story: Way back when I took Advanced, Mr. Z. was auditing the class in preparation for teaching it. As such, he had to give a presentation like everyone else did. Two quotes from said presentation I'll never forget: "I thought somebody needed to change the bong water," and, "I need to cut out those beer lunches."

I would have to agree with you. Looking back on it, I would have liked to take 102 in the summer. I am hoping the SBT program that I am in will save me some cash later on in the long run when it comes to cross country time though!

Haha! Yeah, he still says stuff like that. Like when making a small mistake explaining something; "Oh man, Palmer and I must have shot up too much during lunch"(as he taps his arm with two fingers.

Awesome! When he did part of my 112/14, I thought he was cool enough, especially when someone almost flew into us over Carpet. However, I didn't much care for his 222 class, although it was nice getting out 45 minutes early every time.
