For all those who have stayed at dorms their freshman year. What is the best one?

They are all probably about equally bad in my opinion. It just depends if you want to have tunnels to the dining center or not. If you want the tunnels (which I highly recommend) choose McVey, West, or Brannon (if you have the credits).

Screw the dorms. Bring your car and get an off-campus apartment or rent or buy a house. Make sure it's off-campus.

The dorms are tollerable if you have a good room mate. It also helps if you have one of 3 rooms above the boiler room and have their own year round air-conditioning. We had to run ours constantly, even all through winter. My freshman year dorm experiance was great. I was a lot more homesick freshman year though. One room that you have to share with one other person gets pretty old by spring time. The dorm I was in sophmore year SUCKED!!! I can't emphasize the amount of suck enough. This was in West, which is full of morons from what I can tell. This kid was a socialogy major and had no clue how to be social at all. How ironic. Luckily, I moved out into an apartment after the fall semester.

If you have to do it, get in the wilkerson complex. You don't need a certain amount of credits. Don't let the outside fool you. It looks older than the walsh complex(?), but the walsh complex sucks butt. Swanson is pretty nice, relatively speaking, but you do need a certain amount of credits to get in there. I think you might have to be a grad student. I'm not sure on that.

You couldn’t be further from the truth man…

Living in the dorms was a great way to meet new people when you’re new here, and it gives you an appreciation for being tolerant towards other people (you’re living in close quarters to everyone). I met some good friends living in the dorms. Not saying that you can’t make friends outside of the dorms though...

I think living in the dorms should be a requirement for college students for at least one year. I also think you’d miss out on a part of the college experience by not living in the dorms. Spend a year in the dorms, and then make a decision is what I’d recommend.

That being said, I’d second the Wilkerson complex. West, or McVey would be a good choice.

The dorms are only good for certain people. For an 18 year old, it might be beneficial. But for older folks, it'd be a nightmare. I value my privacy and space. In most cases, living off campus (and ESPECIALLY the inexpensive on-campus apartments) is more affordable. Living off campus with 2 roommates in a 2 bedroom/2 bath apt, as an example, is cheaper, considering the huge amount of money you'd save on food by cooking yourself. Food is a huge expense and minimizing this expense by cooking for yourself can allow you to have your own private room, private bathroom, all at a cheaper price.

I had one hell of a time living in west! I would have felt screwed if i went right into an apartment. The dorms allow you to meet more people than just other aviation geeks.

Or you can live OFF CAMPUS, enjoy the benefits of it, and take advantage of the plenty of opportunities to meet people other than aviation geeks in your general ed classes, attending social gatherings, Martini Blue (a shameless plug), organizations/clubs, etc. That's not difficult to do.

I currently do live in West Hall, and i am a freshman. I agree that it is a wonderful experience. It has given me the chance to meet new and interesting people. I also like the fact that I dont have to go anywhere to meet up with my friends. Everyone is in one place! I look forward to living in an appartment though, don't get me wrong. I just think that it has made it much easier for me to get to know people (to find appartment roommates) in the dorms with everyone in one place!

I would say that West Hall is a great hall. However any of the buildings in the wilkerson complex would be an amazing place to stay because wilkerson is the only dining center open all week.

You bring up a valid point. If you’re older coming into school, maybe the dorms wouldn’t be a good fit.

I lived in Dakota hall and that set up was pretty sweet. plus, they are opening some new dorms for the fall semester, i believe. don't know who will get to live in those dorms though (junior or higher?). i think everyone should experience dorm living, it was good fun.

Exactly - in the past I've tried to persuade people to avoid the dorms, but in reality I have a biased view because of my age when I first dived into the University environment.

I honestly can't say what I would've chosen when I was 18, had I had the chance to attend a University at that age (I only attended a community college...no dorms there).

ok ok. dorms, sure, for first semester.... even after a few months though, youve found your crew and should be ready to live more independently.

plus, as jace said, theres lots of opportunity to meet people, if you are savvy enough to seek them out.

i value my privacy and independence however and dont want/need a dorm mother (R.A.) monitoring my daily activities :-D

that said, i havent been in the dorms here, so i dont know which one would be your best bet.
