Default Flight Time

As was brought up in another thread here in the UND forum (Flying at 7AM)…

Guys, I just got off the phone with the Minneapolis FSDO. (The number to the Fargo FSDO as provided in the AFD was disconnected and no longer in use).

The gentlemen that I spoke with said that you COULDN’T log that time if you didn’t takeoff. (using the scenario that was given in this other thread)

I also asked him if you could log that time that you didn’t takeoff if you went flying in another airplane (in essence credit that time to the flight time in the airplane that you did takeoff), and he said that you couldn’t do that as well.

You need a landing in order to log flight time, so you must takeoff.

Thanks for doing the foot work. That's good to know for sure should this situation ever come up with me.

Good work snickers. Glad to know the FSDO agrees with those of us who actually read the reg.

Just a "point of order" the FSDO has no "power" to make regulatory interps, they can give you their "opinion" but it holds no water if it came down to something like a violation.

Just so happens Mr. Fed dude was right.

Thanks for pointing that out. That is something to note, but I figured the FSDO would carry some more weight to the discussion.

I must also say that the call was a very pleasant experience, and they were more than happy to talk to me. Don’t be afraid to call ‘em!

that is good to hear. i think a LOT of people are afraid/hesitant to consult with "The Man"....

open lines of communication are great and im glad to hear the FSDO contributes to a positive interaction between pilots and the regulatory agency.

Yeah, I didn’t know what to expect from them when I called. But, I’m glad things went as well as they did.

I thought they might be annoyed to answer such a question. Good to know that this individual (and the secretary that I spoke to) made it a pleasant experience.

Talking to “the man” really isn’t as bad as some may think.
