Yes it is. North Dakota is still stuck in 1975. They can't get out.

Yeah, it took me 3 years to find a descent paying job in this town. I almost went into pretty heavy debt because of it too.

Yeah, and I keep getting told you can make a decent living here. I understand you CAN. However it's very difficult. Essentially, it's all a matter of perspective.

I'm sorry, this has what to do with the flight training department at UND or even UND itself??? UND doesn't make state law, it may have a hand in it but I doubt any research was done by the OP as to the effect, if any, UND had on the 5.15 wage in ND.

Yup it sucks, save all of humanity the grief and go to school elsewhere, you will be much happier.

/note

I made no less that 10/hour all through college at NDSU and UND (save the one blackboard washing job at NDSU). The jobs are there, they just don't show up on your front door looking for you.

But the problem is you have dig and look hard for them. I think this has a lot to do with this forum because prospective students want to know if they will be able to find a decent paying job within a reasonable level of searching...before they come to UND.

I can care less about the minimum wage here because I still telecommute to my original job in San Diego, but if I didn't have that opportunity, I'd be very concerned. If I wasn't able to keep my San Diego job, that would've broken my decision to move here. Not going to work for $5.15/hr, or even $9/hr. Flat out not gonna do it. I can't afford to work those wages and for my own personal emergency savings funds comfort, I'd never do it.

That's just it J, the digging and looking. Good jobs don't fall in your lap, you have to hunt for them and more importantly, be qualified for them. Mostly the qualifications is a work ethic, which leads us into a vicious circle.

Hell, jobs in the IT department at the Mayo in RST are starting around 38k or so, and they want 5 plus years experience and a masters degree!

Drive beat trucks, good money, work nights, and get dirty to boot!

There's always good money in waiting tables/bartending. Any suitable restaurants in the area?

Not really, you got the standard Applebees and such but no real high end places that woul make the kind of money off of tips you are thinking of, it simply isn't that kind of town.

Good money to be made in good ole fashioned hard work though.

Sanders is the only place I like that I consider suitable. Of course, most here will disagree and say how great Red Lobster or Perkins is.

Not really. People in this immediate region don't tip as well as other regions. Expect a MAXIMUM of 10%. It is not uncommon for people to come to a restaurant and not tip at all, according to a friend of mine who works at the Grand Forks Red Lobster. Also, wait staff wages are much lower than minimum wage. I can't remember the exact amount.

There are your typical chain restaurants: Applebee's, Perkins, Red Lobster, etc. Actually, those are the only sit-down-style chain restaurants I can think of.

The only decent restaurant around here is Sanders. I've seen the same waiters there since I first arrived here in August of 2004, so I doubt they are looking for new waiters. If you can somehow get into that place, you'll do very well with tips. Service at this place is very good so you should have a lot of table waiting experience behind your belt.

Technically, you almost went into debt because you were spending more than you were taking in. The wage shouldn't make difference.

Hey I gotta eat and pay for gas. I shouldn't say I was going into heavy debt, but I was definitly going from paycheck to paycheck, which made me feel pretty uneasy about the possibility of some unexpected financial situation to come up. 7 bucks an hour part-time doesn't pay for crap up here. 10.50 is nice. I wish I could have found this job when I first came here.

Buying food(good food) in Grand forks is down right insane as far as cost goes, not to mention finding it in the first place.

Just ribbing you...No worries. I've been out of school for some time and I still worry about some unexpected financial situation. It didn't end with college. Does the scholl have any student jobs available? Or is most of the work off campus. $5.15 would kill me. I haven't made that since being a sophomore in HS and I was busing tables....

Yeah, I figured you were. Most of the student jobs max out at abou 6.25 an hour unless you become a supervisor. A lot start at about 5.75. If you're living in the dorms and don't have a car up here, you can actually throw a ton of money in the bank.

This summer I'm gona get my CDL and drive campus busses. I know a friend that drives them that's hooking me up with the job. I hope it goes through. You get 11 per hour plust tips for events. Plus I can drive a rediculously huge vehicle like a dick head. haha I've always wanted to drift a bus!

I see all kinds of grammatical errors, but don't feel like busting his balls on all of them. Maybe I should. Chris you'd better be ready, and you're gona like it!

I got a job driving school buses this august and it pretty much averages about 10 bucks an hour when you drive the kiddies home and with the drunk buses i have received much more.

I would try to avoid most restaurants in town. North Dakotan's hardly tip and Canadians don't tip

This is true. I usually tip 30% if it's good service. At an upscale restaurant (those in civilized towns/cities) it'll be a good 40%.

I think FedEx is one of the better jobs around town. $12+/hr, full benefits including tuition reimbursment.
