Mine will start except I won't start it - it's so hard on the engine. I'm gonna go out there and plug in the oil pan heater... except I still wonder if those things do more harm than good as opposed to block heaters... since I bet they superheat only some of the oil, leaving the rest as THICK FROZEN SLUDGE. Wonderful.

Put a quick-drain on that biotch and take the oil inside with you at night!

Mine cranked over like it was summertime. Oh I love the thought of the metal to metal contact that surely must be going on in there.

Maybe next year when I get an apartment...

This is def. the best solution for those of us who don't have a place to plug in or remote start.

I should have, but I figured it's my last semester here and didn't want to spend $100 on it. I could do it myself, but that would required me to have a heated garage to perform the work in the first place. Try installing a car stereo in -7 degrees - that was bad enough. Minor frost bite on the cheeks...yay.

Any place that requires you to make extensive modifications to basic items from civilization is uninhabitable.

I wonder how many years starting your car up in the cold takes off your car! It doesn't sound like it's good for the engine!

Regardless of temp, startup is when the majority of engine wear occurs. It is worse at colder temps though.

I went up to Winnipeg this weekend. On Sunday morning I went outside to start the Camry. Temperatures were reading -36F. First Try: Click, Click. Second Try: Powered up and ready to go! I let her sit for 30-40 minutes though. Auto start well worth it! Everyone else around my car at the hotel was plugged in and running. I laughed...you see nice Japanese Autos don't need block heaters like an Alero does!

Wow, $300 is cheap!

Best Buy = store with overpriced over-marked-up electronics and services that takes advantage of stupid consumers.

Typically liver damage does occur during the winter months, yes.

my house:

1990 celica - starts every time. never requires a second crank.
2001 integra - starts every time. never requires a second crank.
198something jeep cherokee - starts usually. sometimes on second crank.
1998 cavalier - rarely starts. does a lot of sitting.

ok so maybe its not statistically significant, but thats damn sad when a less than 10 year old car doesnt start, and cars twice its age are doing fine. (jeep, not imported, but it was built when a jeep was still a jeep!)

and yes its generally the american cars i see with those ugly plugs hanging out of them. japtech/engineering = superior.

Also, because some people wish to reduce the wear and tear of cold starts by installing a block heater some how means that their cars are unreliable?

That cavalier of yours should never start. You should probably just throw that thing away. One of the worst cars ever made. Thank god it's gone.

well, someone told me good pilots are bad at math...I think this is true, because if your car has been on the road for 9 years and 1 month, technically speaking your car has only been on the road for about 9.083 years. This makes your car 0.417, or about 5 months younger than you made it out to be.

sorry...I'm lacking a math class this semester...gotta keep my skills sharp
