Default renting from an FBO elsewhere?

ok obviously demonstrating my uncertainty about "leaving the UND bubble" ... what sort of things do you need to bring with you when you rent from an FBO somewhere else?

im down in texas and wanna take my buddy flying... what should i bring with me and what should i expect?

also, i brain-dead and went off and left my logbook at home, should i get that overnighted to me? (i have my license and medical with me....)

You'll most likely need your logbook for their insurance requirements. All you do is go up for about an hour and do stalls, steep turns, slow flight, and landings. That's pretty much it.

Some may require simple E6B problems or flight planning.

For most rental places though it is an open book quiz about aircraft performance and then an hour checkout flight for the insurance.

Both checkouts I've done back home consisted of about a half hour of ground work just going over limitations and making sure I knew how to use the performance charts. The flight was just what has already been mentioned before. Stalls, steep turns, and landings. Then they just copied my logbook, medical and pilot certificate. That was it.

They didn't go over performance and limitations at all... not even some sort of written test. Everything to do with V-speeds was done in the air and he just said to review the POH. The guy who checked me out was a really old high time CFI... I learned a lot from that 1 hour flight.

well i was thinkin about adventure av up in georgetown, couldnt really find anything at KAUS (seems like alliance folded???)

got any good suggestions?

adventure said just come go over the paperwork (v speeds, perf chart for the plane) and go up for a half hour checkout and should be good to go. wasnt too concerned about my logbook. said license and medical is good enough.

89/hr wet for a 172....

89's not bad. That's what I pay for a 1985 piper archer. Anyone know what's available for rent at the crookston airport? I might go to GFK flight support, but if there's better offerings in crookston, I'll go there.

GFK Flight Support is not bad they have the 1980s Cadet. I got checked out there with Mike Gansmann who instructs at UND. You take a rental test with questions all from the POH and a 1 hour basic private pilot checkride type flight. Fargo has a 2005 C172 thats really nice if you like Cessna but the price is $125/hour eek.

not trying to sell what GFKFS has but remember there is gas to/from KCKN too, cadet works out to about 100/hr if you are fuel efficient. you can burn about 8gal/hr and still cruise at 100-105kts.

need a logbook anywhere you go, i found that out and had it overnighted to me when i was in Billings.

as far as checkouts i have experienced the following:
1. "lets go up, you give me a nice landing and we will call it good" this was in a C182 and i had never flown the "normal" type, only one that was an amphib

2. "i am going to need to you calculate a weight and balance by hand, get the weather and interpret all the data and fill out the flight plan" then this was followed by a flight which consisted of "turns around a point, steep turns, chandelles, s-turns, emergencies, stalls, slow flight, every type of landing there is and take off, and a few more things" not sure how we got it done in 1.0 actually

3. "here is how the autopilot works" and that was about it

4. then your normal stuff: stalls, steep turns, 3 landings (that is all i do when i check someone out)

Crookston has a Warrior for $87/hour and the Champ and Cessna 150 are $62/hour. These are wet rates. GFKFS is dry rentals.

champ use to be 49/hr when i rented it, so that went up quite a bit. GFKFS is dry you are right, works out to about 100/hr for the cadet

Do you still work at flight support? I think I might get checked out in the arrow sometime here in the near future.

depends on the course you are in.

323/70 = arrow ground only checkout (also makes you good for the cadet, but you need to fill out the test on that as well). done with 325 will also work for arrow ground checkout

221/20 = cadet ground only checkout

anything under those minimums = full checkout for specific training. stage check also needs to have been done w/in last year or full 1 hr ground and 1 hr flight per insurance requirements

make an appointment, you need to pick up the packet to fill out before the checkout, ask for Brandon to do the checkout if you wish

UND ground only checkouts are free to you the renter, otherwise the checkouts cost 99.00+ gas for the cadet and 119+gas for the arrow

*does 3 touch and goes*

"ok good to go"

*tosses keys at me*

no paperwork, no muss no fuss.
