Yeah, the bigger wheels will make stopping harder. Not as bad as the morons that put 20's on their car and don't upgrade the brakes.

nothing annoys me more. well maybe people who drive like lunatics in the winter because they have a 4x4 which means you can stop better too, right?

Yeah, talk about rotational mass!

Exactly! I find it interesting that the rotating mass of the wheel has more of an affect on acceleration and braking than the weight of the friggen vehicle. One of my friends who has a camaro went from mid 13s to low 12s just changing the damn wheels. He tried out both wheels at the last autocross event he was at and he dropped off a few seconds changing to the smaller lighter wheels. Yes, camaros can autocross Jason.

I also love it when a people say "I need a 4x4 for the snow and ice" when in reality it becomes a female-driver-death-trap as it's almost always driven in two wheel drive to the rear wheels (unless it's AWD or full-time 4x4)...along with the SUV being so top heavy that it's much easier for it to get up on 2 wheels...let alone the #####ty handling it has due to it being on a heavy truck chassis with rear or sometimes (God forbid) both rear AND front leaf-spring suspension. If anyone wants a vehicle for daily driving on the roads it would be an AWD car...like a Subaru, Audi Quattro, or 325xi BMW...or if you are one of those who can afford a Cadillac Escalade (which seems to be the average debt-hungry population nowadays...brought to you in part by home equity loans or 8 year car loans) consider a Mercedes E320 4Matic stationwagon. Heck, even the H2 Hummer costs more than the E320 4Matic! But certain people are affected by the typical American automotive CULTURAL norms that harbor their masculine and penile endowment insecurities...so they end up choosing the penis extension F-350 or Hummer H2.

I've seen a few autocross - in fact there is a guy with a modified 2006 Mustang GT from Winnipeg who attends the Grand Forks and Fargo autocrosses... he ends up ranking really high. It's all about the driver in that case ...j/k......well, partially haha.

That's my theory on why so many people drive these behemiths. They turn like crap, stop like crap, and accelerate like crap. WHICH THEY SHOULD!!!! It's a damn truck!!!! Why anyone would put up with that on a daily basis has to be because they are insecure and need to compensate for it. I get pretty aggravated whenever I look at new trucks and SUVs today. They're HALF as capable as they're older counterparts. People bought them to compensate for said insecurities and then complained about them because they drove like a truck. DUH!!!!!!!!!! When the day comes when I need a truck, I'm gona have to buy something from the 80s or 90s or buy the heavy duty stuff. Look at all the midsize SUVs, ALL of them are soccermom vans. The trailblazer is a ###### joke compared to the blazer I had. Mine had a puny 2.8 and still towed 800 pounds more than the new trailblazer. Whatever, I'll stop before I get too into this. It just annoys the hell out of me when a lot of people buy things that I like, complain about them and then they get pampered or whatever and then you have the bastardized abominations we have on the road now called trucks and SUVs. Sadly this is working it's way into almost everything. 4 door charger???????!?!?!?! 2 and a half ton BMW M5 that is no where near as capable as the e39 M5 and dang near drives like a 7 series!?!?!?!

Sigh....

the only SERIOUS SUV is a late 80's Ford BRONCO (not the tiny bronco II, the original BEAST.)

haha yeah I'm with you on this... even with all the lightweight "improvements" they did on it like the aluminum chassis, the E60 M5 still weighs over 4000 lbs!

The 80's bronco may look and drive like a badass but they are plauged with problems from the beginning. The bronco was a good desing but Ford is Ford and well they build crap.

Straight axels>Independant suspension. Maybe not for handling on the road. But for rock crawling or driving on extremely uneven terrain, towing, and hauling, straight axels for the win!

Along with drag racing... straight axles plant the power better.

You know, some people drive trucks because they like them. It really has nothing to do with any "insecurities" as a couple of you so allege.

Which I don't have a problem with. What I do have a problem with is most people that buy trucks just to have trucks immediately complain about the ride, lack of features, lack of passenger room, etc. Next thing you know we have these bastardizations on the the road that are barely more capable than a damn van. You used to be able to buy a half ton that could tow 9000 pounds. Now you have to buy the super heavy duty trucks to do that. It's not a drive train limit either. It's the suspension. It's so damn soft now because these pandsies can't take the ride that you're tongue weight limit goes down the crapper. Put the Duramax diesel and allison transmission in an old 70s ford, chevy or studdabaker, and I bet you could tow 20,000 pounds. Case point, trucks are becoming this way for one soul reason. People are insecure enough that they must compensate by towering over everybody on the road, but don't want to put up with driving a vehicle that has almost unlimited utilitarian purposes, so they bitch about it to dealers, which goes to the manufacturer, which then goes to the guys designing them and progressively each generation becomes nothing more than a van with bigger tires.

You know, if you need an extended cab truck with an 8 foot bed, you have to order it now? STUPID!!!!!! It's not Ford, Dodge, or Chevy's fault either.

It's sad that when I ride in my friends trailblazer, the ride is smoother than my friggen cutlass ciera old lady car. That is NOT how a truck or SUV is supposed to be designed, and their extremely reduced capability is a result of this.

I'm not saying it should ride like it has no suspension at all, but it sure as hell should be stiff enough to be able to go off road(not soft roading), have descent payload, and towing capacity.

I've always wanted to buy an ex-police-cruiser at a car auction it'd be so much fun to make a stunt driving film...with some sort of crazy cops and robbers plot and story.

Haha, me too. There's something about black crown vics and mercury marauders that are just cool. There's a kid on campus driving around in an ex-squad car. I want it!

I think the only decent off-roading SUVs/4x4's available brand new now are the Land Rover Discovery, Mercedes G-Wagen, Mercedes Unimog, and of course the Jeep Wrangler. All of the above have locking diff's and rigid axles... even the Toyota Landcruiser is a decent off-roading vehicle other than it's front independent suspension disadvantage (for off-roading obviously)...but at least the Landcruiser has a locking center diff.

...even my parent's 4-wheel independent suspension M-Classes are good vehicles for the light off-roading we do like this seen here and here and here. At least they have low-range and an active locking differential...but still ain't no rockcrawler. I wish I had some better pictures of some crazy stuff my dad does in his...like one wheel way up in the air with the other side inches from a boulder... I have a video somewhere of that. Obviously you won't be using it on the Rubicon, but my dad's friend has taken his ML320 on some portions of the Rubicon and removed the front and rear bumpers ...along with lots of body damage
