I'll give you the cliffsnotes. Gas is expensive, US airlines aren't charging enough for what it costs to operate the flight. Emirates is an awesome airline, has been expanding really really fast, and will continue to do so. And Dubai sounds awesome and I really wanna go there. You have to be a pretty experienced pilot to get on with Emirates (4,000 hours TT was minimum for f/o position if I remember correctly), but if you do get on with them, they treat you really really well.

I think I learned more about airline economics from this guy than I did in my airline ops class :-P

UAE is also building a massive new airport, 6 parallel 12 or 15,000 foot runways. Would be a good job if you didn't have to live in Dubai, plus no unions in the UAE.

What's wrong with living in Dubai?

I should have said I wouldn't want to live in Dubai, I'm pretty sure my wife would kill me. Plus, all that sand, eeeeek, sand everywhere, even in the crack of your, well you get the idea.

I could deal with Dubai, looks like a really interesting city. Yeah, no unions in UAE, but as an expat they provide you housing, pay you damn well, and I saw on their website they even give you an interest free car loan when you get there.

I've only been there a couple of times and was only on the ground for 14 hours or so. Really neat city, indoor ski resort to boot, go figure. Honest question, how safe is, relatively, for Americans to be living in that part of the world in the current climate. I realize the UAE is like the Las Vegas of the middle east, and I have never heard of anyone getting razzed at all, just curious if anyone actually knows someone living over there?

There was a great article in Business Week a few weeks ago about Dubai. Great picture on the cover too! I don't see much sand though

Gorgeous city, but any empty lots, and there aren't that many, is just a sandbox (bad pun I know). If I was single I would definately try it out, but married and with a kid, yup she would skin me alive if I said "Hey Honey, we be moving to the middle east!"

That is very true. It does look like beautiful city though..wouldn't mind living there myself for 7-10 years.

from what I've heard its really safe there. Dubai has so many expats from so many different places, I would imagine everybody there is pretty open minded. That being said, because of so many expats, it would make a good target for people looking to mess things up.

Emirates presentation was definitely a good one! He had a bunch of brochures but somehow those were never handed out. Keith Bruce from Continental was great too. To hell with powerpoints and do it the old fashion way with markers and paper. I felt bad for the SAMA chick that had to go up and paste the sheets of paper on the board after he was done with them.

Hopefully all this crap will be over with soon enough. UAE Airlines will be expanding for quiet a while, and should be an excellent oppurtunity for guys just getting into the regional world. Heck you could even by one of those islands they are making out there, the one that looks like a mercator projection map, I want to own Norway!

I know, yeah!! I missed the presentation too, but I was reading about Emirates the other day at their website. Their compensation package is just amazing. I believe they'll also pay for your children's education up through high school or something like that. It's amazing how much they're willing to compensate US pilots that move over there. Emirates has been going around the US presenting their airline to prospective applicants. I really wish I would have gone to see the Emirates presentation along with the Continental presentation, Continental being my airline of choice in the future.<br>

Flew with a Captain the other day that has an interview this week. He was pretty stoked! I'll try to follow up with him and see how it went. Apparently they are paying his for stay the whole week! Sounds cool.

What can I say, being that my dad works as a petroleum engineer in the middle east, the hardcore place named KSA, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Born there, grew up there, great deals too, but really I would not go to Saudi again, UAE is much different, much more open minded. Bahrain.. the red light district of it all, Saudi Bar, hookers, strippers as they say.

I belong in the mediterranean though, fly to Europe and connect Asia with Europe.

I'ts gonna be great flying international. I so miss different languages already, currencies, exchange shops. Haha reminds me my first time in GFK, I asked for a DOVIZ exchange (Weschell) shop. :P

The international flying idea gets more and more enticing every day. Would be nice for a newbie in the industry to go somewhere it seems like pilots are respected again. Ive heard people compare flying in that area to the glory days of aviation in the US.

With that said, hows this sound as a plan for making it to say Emirates down the road. I have heard they dont hire RJ driver, JUST YET AT LEAST (heard that might be changing). So what about going to say india, gettin on with Air India, they hire super low time guys from what i understand, get into an Airbus 310 for a few years. Build up that 4000 min time and 2000 in an airbus or boeing that it seems emirates like, then get to Dubai. From what i understand this place is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Its nice to think that the US is such a great place AND IT IS but its losing its luster and in this "flattening world" other places are catching up in terms of QOL and good opportunity.

Upgrade time has jumped anywhere from 5-7yrs. To live there it, costs ton of cash. Grant it they pay for ur housing, but that is THEIR house. To buy a house there it will cost you a ton of cash, unless you want to live outside of the city. The pay for FO starts about 53k, non taxed. I have been reading other forums, you guys need to reaseach all aspects of flying for Emirates.

I also think they are a sick airline. Would not mind flying for them. It would be cool if they has US base, SFO or something.

EK have started to hire RJ pilots.

The only way you can get on with Air India as a low time pilot is if you are an Indian citizen. That said, there are possibilities in India for low time guys right now due to their severe pilot shortage.

You'd probably build time faster in the States. My idea would be to stay in the States and get to an RJ operator to build up to the required time quickly. That would also get you the chance at 1000 PIC that all the U.S. carriers like to see. That way you have options. The more options you have the better.

Upgrade time in the Boeing is 3 years or less right now. Upgrade time on the Airbus is 3.5 years. A pilot hired today can reasonably expect to upgrade in 5 years based on current plans.

Starting pay is $64,000 after the latest pay raise. Add another 12% to that for the company's contribution to a retirement fund. Housing, ride to work, school fees, medical, etc are all additional benefits that are part of the whole package. The job is easily the equivalent of one in the States of $100,000 per year or more. The only downside to the pay package for Americans is that EK's reimbursement for school expenses is based on the British School system costs. The American system is much more expensive.

Eating caviar served by a Miss Universe contestant on the way to London = Much better than any job in the States.
