Default SCCA Solo 2 Autocross Schedule - Grand Forks!

Since a few of you on here expressed interest in the SCCA Badlands Chapter autocross events, here is the 2006 schedule. Due to a high turnout last year, they've added a LOT more events in Grand Forks.

I just hope that the track this year isn't as slow and short as last year's. If anyone wants to see how the track was, click here (right-click, save as please) for my in-car cam video.

All you need is a car - preferably a descent handling car and some racing experience if you want to try to win - but seriously, ANY car will do and you'll have a blast. Helmet is required, but they have loaner helmets if you are so inclined to share other people's sweat.

I will be at all 8 events! I better see Tom and Tugrul there... Tugrul I think your BMW is in the same class as me (G Stock) so maybe we'll compete against eachother

Also this is a great way for you guys to test your car's limits - safely and legally. You can learn some valuable car handling techniques that will make you a better and safer driver on the road. Autocrossing is a big thing among BMW, Porsche, and Miata enthusiasts in the west and east coasts. It has spread popularity throughout the midwest in recent years.

I'd rather eat dog poo then drive a Miata. Anyone who drives a Miata should be castrated.

Actually, Miata's are one of the best handling "poor man's" sports cars available. Some day in the near future, I'd like to get an old 1st Gen Miata and use it solely as a track car (won't be street legal in the end sure). They're chassis is very nimble, highly moddable, and the engine will take track abuse unlike any other car.

Sometimes people prefer function over "what other people will think about your car". If a Miata will function to fulfill a sports car enthusiast's desires, so be it.

The guy who always gets first place in the Badlands SCCA races a Miata and goes to the SCCA national finals and always places at least 3rd...against BMW and Porsche drivers.

You have a car right? That's all you need... or if you want, you can ride in my car on one of the runs. You're allowed up to 1 passenger.

That looks like a lot of fun. I don't think I'm going to take my Camry out there though.... BUT, I'd glady accept any offer to ride with you on a run in the fall.....

Oh come on - it'd be fun Sure thing though... it's actually a lot of fun to take passengers, especially girls because they get really scared.

I want a miata with an LS7 swap. No, Im not kidding. That would be a "who wants to die in 2 seconds?" kind of car.

I'll watch, but I dont think it'd be a good idea for me to take my car out there. As funny/potentially awsome as that would be. I know I could take some punk in a pontiac grand pricks or civic at least. Im not referring to you at all Jason, but you know the stereotype all to well Im sure.

Haha, wellll I'm not a girl, so I won't be scared. My Step-Father raced F2 in Europe and I drive with him all the time, so I think I've been as scared as possible cruising around with him in his car...Hahah

Oh wow, LS7? Jeeze, the weight distribution on that thing would be so biased towards the front haha... I remember reading a magazine article about a Miata with 5.0 liter Mustang engine swap. Man just amagine the power to weight ratio...and it was no ordinary 5.0 engine. It was highly modded. They had to do some intensive chassis mods just to get the thing to mount properly.

Actually Jason, the car only gains 60 pounds. GM did something VERY right when they made the LS series engines. Thats one advantage of pushrods over OHC.

Wow - there's only a couple of cars that GM has ever done right that engine is one of them.

Actually, I think you'd stand a chance. There's always an advantage to having a decent handling car, but in the end it's always limited to the capability of the driver!

It's my belief that GM just lets to many people put their "input" into the design and production of their cars. Accountants and management have absolutely NO business in this area. I blame the creation of the cavalier, sunfire, 3800 pound camaro crap box, killing of the s-10, ect. on that very thing.

GM lets way to many people get involved, which is what was holding them back. Lutz(GM's ceo) is thankfully changing this around. It might be too late though.

I've always prefered domestics. I DO like imports, dont get me wrong. I tend to try to find a domestic counterpart to everything though when I seriously think about cars I would want to buy. I would really hate to see GM slip to the wayside. Especially seeing what they've done with the new vette. I would go as far to say that there is NOTHING that touches that car this side of 300,000 dollars. Now, why does most of the other cars(minus the trucks) have to suck so bad?

I remember reading something about the creation of the new C6 z06 corvette and Lutz basically told every buddy to stay the #%%$ away from it and let the engineers and designers do their thing. Whether or not thats true, I dont know. I like to think its true though.

[End GM rant of the day]

Yeah Bonnevilles aren't the greatest handling cars, but I'm looking at getting a different car this summer, it's been two cars since I've had a manual and I'm really damn sick of automatics. Yeah I'll probably come out and watch though.

I didnt even notice you posted videos. Have you ever tried shuffle steering?

Its hard to get good at, but man, once you do you can turn the wheel from full left to full right in like .3 seconds. The hardest thing to learn is when to release one hand from the wheel and grab it with the other. My hands used to keep running into eachother in the middle and made for very jerky steering motions.

Watching that has inspired me to give it a try. Im not gona go balls to the wall by anymeans, but I'll push it just a little.

For those that are saying they dont have the right car. It doesnt really matter. I get more satisfaction in out driving someone in my poorly setup car than I do actually putting down good times. Driving any car at its limits is fun to me I guess.

I used to have a video of some girl that had never raced before and by the 8th run she was seriously kicking butt. IN A MINI VAN!!!
