| Hey guys, so I've found out that it's pretty darn cold over there in ND, and I know i'm probably going to get some pretty obvious answers (i.e. NOTHING!!!), but what do you guys do when it is this cold? and my mother was concerned about the whole frost bite issues and wanted to make sure I asked you guys about it... so yeah... alright, peace bauer

| Well, The Daytona 500 is on tomorrow so I'll be watching that! Really though the cold is not always fun but in all honesty its not that bad. 3 days ago I was flying in beautiful sunlight and smooth air finishing 2 lessons but by the time we flew back to grand forks it was 1/2 mile visibility in snow, fog and blowing snow with a windchill of -35F, we just filed IFR and had a great time actually. Got our flight done and had a good expirience flying back. My point is you'll get to learn how to fly in some interesting weather but the cold RARELY stops you from getting anything done. We play hockey (both in and outdoors reguardless of weather) snow football, go to hockey / basketball games, movies, anything indoors you can think of - and the rest of the year we do about anything else you'd do in a town of 60K... There are more desireable places to live but there are a lot more options than we talk about usually... But I am guilty of whining from time to time too.. That help? |

| Old Skool | if you are concerned about doing essentially ANYTHING social, cultural, or outside of school... you are coming to the wrong place. things to do in grand forks: sit. drink. sit and drink. |

| Im one of the idiots you see walking around campus and on the ramps with no hat and gloves on(I hate hats). Is frost bite a big concern? No If the winds are up however, then yes it is a big deal, but you definetly dont need anything special up here to cope with the cold. Im from Iowa so Im somewhat used to cold weather. If cold weather really bothers you, you might want to spend a little more money on "good" stuff.

| Like said above, the cold really doesnt stop you from having a life. Just like in any other town there are things to do, but of course you have to use your imagination. Sometimes you have to create your own fun like going to an icy parking lot and doing doughnuts. Other times you can go out. We have movie theatres, bars, clubs, places to play pool, bowling alleys, and shopping malls. I think about all other towns have those things. Grand Forks would be great if it had a lake, but it doesnt so you make do. Really...how much you make your college experience depends on you. As far as the cold is concerned, I was downtown the other night when it was 20 below or so, and there were a lot of people out. There were a few party busses and parking was difficult. I drove by Bucks and the Green Mill on my way downtown and noticed that the places were packed. The cold really doesnt stop many people from going out and having fun. |

| Senior Member | I really wish this place was an hour away from Minneapolis, far enough to concentrate on school, close enough to get out. Why couldn't they have made it somewhere like St.Cloud, you could get more students, and perhaps aviation wise more experince with traffic. Well yeah then they could have a sattellite up here for the ones that are punished. Oh well, at least I don't mind the 4 hour drive to msp, just costs money. |

| I think we've had this discussion before and decided the UND aviation program needed to move to Duluth... Oh, and I live in the southwest burbs of the cities, and I'd never gotten frostbite till I went to GF... it swells, gets hard, hurts, then life goes on... |

| You look like a badass ninja in that pic! But I have a fleece facemask and it did the trick of keeping me warm when it was -24 with windchills of -40. I walked from the Union to Wilky that day ![]() |

| I dont have a problem with chapped lips or dry hands so not wearing the proper attire for the 3 minutes that Im outside walking to class doesnt bother me. There really is no reason not to, I just dont I guess. I do, however, at least have the stuff with me in the car and wear it if Im gona be outside for longer periods of time.
