Default My First Solo!

Finally, I finished my first solo here at UND. with 9.5 UND hours and 19 TT (from my previous flying from home, last tiem I flew was MAy 2004). I did my first solo here at UND. It was an excelletn experience, I made a few littler errors, I took off flaps to 40, I was wondering why I was at 60-70 durign climbout when I should be 80. and I turned based a little too early and there was another Warrior on final, so I went around, other than that everything went well and im back in my dorm to post on Jetcareers. Good luck to all and have a safe flying Over all its been a great weekend I got my Physics test up to 71 (A), I won $105 from Thief River falls Casino, and I finished my solo safely and succesfully .

Congrats! I should be going up pretty soon, I just need to retake my pre-solo test cause of some stupid mistakes. I might have a brain freeze and forgot to remove flaps too, but glad to see everything was fun.

It feels good doesn't it? You must be getting close to starting your cross countries and that is where the real fun starts!

Congratulations Chris. Nicely done. One question though...flaps 40? Was this during a touch and go that you left the flaps at 40? Or was this during your first take-off....?

You always have the best landings when there's nobody around to enjoy it.

Congrats! I bet you're looking forward now to your first solo X/C! The Devil's Triangle (GFK-DVL-JMS-GFK) seems to be a popular choice. Happy flying!

I thought that was called the "iron triangle"?

Mainly because its navigatable(if thats a word) by VORs during the entire route as well as GPS. Getting lost on that route pretty much means you should quit life.

I've heard it called both ways before. Yeah, it would be pretty tough to get lost on that flight... that's for sure

the warrior should make it to Bismarck, and you might want to get fuel there, I went to Williston for my flight non stop, only issue was I had to use the WC like a mofo. Yeah so.. hanging out, is what makes this flying fun, otherwise I hate the whole procedural land and get out deal. The best flight I ever had was the one to St. Paul, and we got the Jaguar, went to the chinese Great Moon Buffet on roberts st. Met up with my friend and had a great dinner including my inst. I think as long as you have enough launches schedueled in you can hang out. But I'm not a UND expert, nor fan of the fly land and come back deal. But heck why not visit friends?

If you're on the ground for more than 1.5 hours (if memory serves me correctly) you need to get dispatch's approval. I remember when i was going through multi I had to get approval to spend more than 1.5 hours on the ground at KMSP (I planned on being at KMSP for 2.0 hours). I think that the answer to your question is talked about in the "dispatch" supplement which should be in your TCO.

I think the whole reason behind the limit in how long you can stay is to prevent us immature kids from getting into some trouble - ie, taking some buddies along for a plane ride at your x-c destination airport...which is otherwise perfectly legal.

But it's a good idea I think... I don't know exactly if they have this regulation to reduce insurance costs, but I have a feeling it is. Or...the airplane insurance agent for UND doesn't allow it as to minimize accident/insurance payout risk. Maybe the have this rule in place to reduce insurance costs, which in turn reduce our per hour rental costs.

Does anyone know the real answer???

Dispatch has told me before that the time limit is set in place to ensure that the airplane is being flown. UND isn't making any money with the airplane sitting on the ground with the props not moving. Plus, it takes away an airplane that some other student could have been using.

I was planning on flying back home, Davenport IA. Which is located on that portion where the mississippi flows east and west.

Im gona have 15 hours to make up for at the end of 323 here so I'm gona see about getting an overnight approved to go down there. My instructor for 221 chickened out. Both the chief flight instructor(forgot who I talked to) and Leo approved. Im gona do it in the warrior I think. My dad would kill me if I did an 8 hour flight in the arrow. hehe

i can understand UND wanting to maximize revenue but at some point you just have to say christ, we are already spending multi-thousands of dollars here, let us have a little leisure with our EARNED and BOUGHT priveledges!! (sp?)

i plan to fully maximize that 1.5 hours of ground time then!

I got approval to stay in Minneapolis for 4 hours... I went to the Mall of America and bought stuff you can't buy here in GFK... plus went to a pretty nice restaurant. Sorta did what you can't ever do in GFK.

When on X-Countries we usually give you 15 minutes to do landings. If you're put down more than 30 mins. on the ground, we usually question that. UND is not making any money with plane's sitting on the ground. Best thing to do is come talk to us at dispatch!
