Default Double Majoring???

I have been accepted to both ERAU and UND and Im pretty sure I will be making the correct choice in selecting UND. Im leaving for Grand Forks from Seattle on Monday to visit.

One of the reasons I think UND would be better for me is that I could have the ability to double major and have a real college experience vs Embry Riddle.

I have also accepted the idea that if I do double major, I will need to take a lot of the classes over the summer if I want to graduate in four years, if not I can handle five.

My question is: How hard is it to double major in an aviation related degree and business? Is this realistic? What about the time frame?

It is my hope that this will keep me from not putting on my eggs in one basket in case I cant get a job after I graduate.

Thanks,

Im not sure about business, but I was thinking about double majoring in commercial aviation and meteorology. This would have taken five years to do. Even with taking classes over the summer. Im getting a minor in meteorology instead.

Im sure it would be the same way with double majoring in business if not 2 additional years to the 4 years. Depends how many credits you take as well, but I would expect it to take at least 5 years.

Default do what you want to!

You should be able to double-major in business in 5 years without much of a problem. Lots of people do it here (UND). I also considered this for a time, but decided against it, which I believe was the best choice. Yes, it is nice to have a backup, but 30 credits of undergrad business classes probably aren't as amazing of a backup as some people seem to think. How much are you going to remember from those business classes if you lose your medical 10 or 20 years down the road? And remember, it is only the equivalent of one year of classes.

In my opinion, if you know you want to fly, you are better off just doing that, and getting some work experience under your belt. If things change later, worry about it then. Your attitude and work ethic will be the important factors if you decide to change careers, not a few classes you took a long time ago. Textbooks are no substitute for real world experience, and many successful business people majored in history or something completely unrelated. In fact, you can do that for aviation too. There are many benefits and opportunities if you come to an aviation school, but in the long run, it does not give you any advantage over a philosophy or language major. In fact, it may even be a disadvantage if you allow yourself to become too single-minded... many AVIT program grads can be less interesting to talk with than someone with more rounded life experiences. (being here, it has been a challenge for me to try to stay well-rounded!)

Not trying to talk you into or out of anything here, just wanted to give you a few things to think about as you make your decision. That being said, UND is a very good school. Just consider all of your options. There are many ways to get the job done- talk to a few airline pilots- you might be surprised at the wide range of backrounds they come from.

Good Luck! (PM me if you have other specific questions)

Double Majoring in Commercial Aviation and Aviation Mangt.are pretty similar so it only requires something like 34 more credits which can easily be done in 2 more semesters or so. I was thinking about it then decided to just do aviation mangt. because I want to get out of here, but if you wanted to it wouldn't be too hard up here at UND.

Always rely on yourself for the "back-up plan", not some ink printed on a piece of parchment.

that said, why is everyone in such a hurry to get old? oh noes! 5 years of college is too long!

more like, dear god, im about to have to go find a "real" job. piss.

Do you guys think that doing the semester or two of credits beyond Aviation Management to get Commecial Aviation (double major) is really worth it? I was planning on doing the Aviation Management, and tagging on CFI, CFII, MEI, and maybe the CRJ sim. However, doing all these extra courses with the Aviation Management, brings me REALLY close to just getting the double major. Do you think the Commercial Aviation degree would be worth the extra cost/time here? Would having a double major look that much better to an employer?

See im in the same boat as you with that. When it comes down to the difference of only a few classes (already have CFI, working on CFII) I think that its worth it to just take the extra classes.
