So based on the other thread by Screamin Emu....Iīm assuming you fail 414 ground school if you donīt finish up flying by finals week, just like 323? that is gay.

As long as you get through lesson 29 by the end of the semester you are ok and should receive an incomplete in the ground school - this gives you 12 months from when you STARTED ground school to finish the flying. If you have to retake CFI for any reason however you have until the last day to drop a course to finish the flying. It really shouldn't be hard to get to lesson 29 during a semseter which is why they have that rule in place - many people will sit on the 31 stage or on lesson 32 for a long time which is why they have that rule, if you didn't make much progress at the beginning of the course they don't figure it will be any better trying to get through the prog and final checks. If there is some extenuating circumstance that you may not have made it through to lesson 29, plead your case to your 414 ground school prof and they may still give you the incomplete. I really think the 323 policy (and 414 for that matter) are good ones though. You need to realize that the people who implement these policies are not out to get you, they've seen these scenarios work out time and time again - and unfourtunately sometimes you need a negative motivator to keep things running. Behind every student in every class there is bound to be someone wanting to be in their place - so this keeps those who made it into that class motivated and progressing into the next course. Poor completion rates hurt EVERYONE, thats why they are so important. If someone doesn't finish a course that airplane sits on the ground during the lab that person WOULD be taking, then that student takes up someone elses time at the end of the semester during stage check time (because thats how long it takes for the last semester student to get off their butt to finish), it also leaves a hole in the instructors schedule who would be teaching that unfinished student in the next course etc. etc. It took me years to understand all the implications these things have and when I was a student I felt targeted by some of those policies as well, however they are for EVERYONE's good - including yours. Besides - you CANNOT tell me that it is tough to get 18 lessons done in a semester. really. I took 323 during 9/11 and was grounded from VFR flight for at least something like 3 weeks, they also had gear problems with the arrows that year which grounded the fleet for probably a week, also had a MONTH between my last review and stage check and I still finished. Even with those 2 months of lost time during the semester there really wasn't a good reason that it took me until the end of the semester to finish my checkride and XC's - but I still got done in time.
