Haha, just had to say that in light of the "Christmas vs. Holiday" debate. What's everyone doing for winter break? I'll be back at home enjoying the sunny warm weather. Probably will be at the beach and eating sushi (mmm tasty) most of the time.

The plan is for me to fly with my dad from O61 to SFO. Problem is, there is a $109 landing fee, plus the typical rape fees you get from the FBO there. I want to do it for the experience...and photo opportunities ![]() Since I'll be scared as hell operating in San Francisco Class B, I'll take the flight controls and I'll have my Dad take the radio. He's MUCH more experienced in busy airspace than I am.

You should do the "Bay Tour" if you are heading over towards SFO! I don't have the guts to try that yet...but I REALLY want to.I'll be back in CA as well for Christmas. Weather permitting, i'm going O61 to ...somewhere. Probably just taking my dad and/or sister on a short cross country. (My mom is too scared to step foot in a plane with me )

I'll second what was said about the 140's terrible performance. I got my PPL in one of those. My instructor weighed roughly 250 pounds and you could seriously tell a HUGE difference when he wasnt in it. Its alright if its just you by yourself. But throw another person in there and its performance is barely adequate to get you to traffic pattern altitude before you pull back on downwind to descend. I fly an archer back home now, so I kinda feel the same way about warriors now too. I cant wait to get out of here. Although all I do is get to go back to more snow. Might get one flight in while Im home too. I got like .1 actual instrument in 222. I hate, HATE, simulated instrument flying with a passion. So 222 was not interesting at all as far as the actual flying was concerned. The new stuff I learned was pretty cool but applying it with simulated instrument flying only just plain sucked. I honestly didnt get excited for a single flight that was on a nice or semi-nice day. One cross country was ok. It still didnt really feel like flying though. Just looked up about once an hour and saw an airport is all. Pretty much like 20 sim lessons. I need to go up with some friends and remind myself what it is I like about flying. That and hours and hours of messing around in the snow will be in order.

The guy on the South end of the runway that has the 100 foot tall radio antennae on his house got it knocked down three times by planes on final. As a result, the airport authority decided to make a runway threshold extending almost the full 1/2 of the runway. When I got checked out in the 172 there the flight instructor thought I was strange that I landed after the threshold. He said "oh we don't do pay attention to the chevrons, just land on them". When I got back I watched every plane land as soon as there was black pavement! It's your typical mom and pop type airport/airpark. People who live in the airpark are crazy... since they've got their Beech Baron or whatever parked on their hangar attached to their house, depending on where their house is along the runway they'll take off closest to their house regardless of the winds. On the way back they'll land the opposite direction to get to their house quickly...again regardless of the winds. It's funny to watch. Of course the winds are rarely anything above 10 knots...but still. Just remember when departing the runway southbound weave in and out of that canyon (where houses and the hill will be higher than you on the left side!) and be sure to make extra RADIO calls because people don't seem to use their radios much.

Yeah check out these websites... there are charts you can buy outlining "Bay Tour" routes. I can't wait to do this! http://sjflight.com/BayTour.htm This one has multiple California tours: http://www.goodflying.com/flightlog/frameset_map.html http://www.sonicspike.net/flying-pictures/albums/45 http://www.sonicspike.net/flying/baytour/

That looks like that would be just awsome. If you're not stressed out at least. That looks as good if not better than flying up the coast of lake michigan by chicago. That's a hell of a lot easier to do too. I want to see some pics as well!

I heard that you have to make sure you "sound like" you know what you are doing when doing the bay tour...and they will give you some slack. Also, make sure you know all the visual checkpoints, etc. Otherwise, if you mess up slightly the controllers will say, "Fly heading 270, squawk VFR, frequency change approved."

I've driven my car into Tijuana many times and it's a lot of fun. No body follows the rules to the road and while there are perfectly marked lanes people seem to think that 3 lanes means fit 8 cars side by side and push your way through. Whenever you're in Tijuana with your car always get baja insurance or else if you are pulled over the cops like to use lack of Mexican insurance as an excuse to throw you in jail, unless of course you give them a few $20 bills that they pocket!

I've done the bay tour many many times. The SFO controllers are nice most of the time. I'd advise against landing at SFO. The landing fee is horrible, signature sucks, and you dont want to be that guy that screws up everything into and out of SFO. The only way you could really get in there in the morning is to go in IFR. Early to mid afternoon you might be able to get away with it. You could probably get in there at 1am till about 5:30am VFR. If you are looking for places to land near SFO, Palo Alto (PAO) my home is nice but busy. San Carlos (SQL) is not as busy and closer to SFO. They have a $5 transient parking fee per day. Much better than the $100+ at SFO. Half Moon Bay is right on the ocean and I did my flight training there. They too have the $5 fee. There are not really any services at HAF but it has a great resturant. Fuel is self service and the airport is often impacted by bad weather. I dont do a lot of flying on the other side of the bay, but you could go to Hayward (HWD) but I dont know what their overnight fees are. |
