Default GFK on Radio

So, I'm driving to school this morning listening to a Boston Radio Station. They are just starting the news, so I thought I'd listen in. They talk about some things and then the newscaster says "And the weather sure sucks out in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It's so bad, they have closed the airport." Then he plays a clip of a guy being interviewed about the weather. At first I starting laughing at this guys accent. Then I started laughing at what he was saying. ".....Well they closed the taxiways or runways or something because of ice, and I'm getting really frustrated and I really just want to get the hell out of here..."

After the sound clip was over all the radio hosts starting laughing at the guy. One says "Well it is North Dakota." The other says "That's soooo Faahhhgo." (Meaning Fargo)

Anyway, that's the first time I have ever heard North Dakota mentioned on the radio! How's the weather out there guys? Is it all ice like he said?

Yeah...it's pretty much all ice. Not too bad though here -- we actually missed out on the bad part of the storm. It is actually worse down to the Southeast. I heard that between Fergus Falls and Fargo, 41 big rigs were in the ditch the other day. They ended up closing down that part of the road. I guess cars have been stuck in the ditch all over the place and there is a waiting list for a tow truck. I had to drive back from the airport in Fargo that same day, but I think I was like 2 hrs. ahead of all the freezing rain. I got back here just in time...there wasn't even any snow here at that time.

Sounds like a mess. We had four to five inches of snow here since Thanksgiving. But it already melted with the help of today's 60 degree weather!

Oh, and Happy Birthday Erik!

Yeah, this place sucks! Northwest cancelled all of its flights into GFK yesterday. Kinda glad I came back on Friday and flew into FAR;-)

Yeah even with snow/ice tires on my car I can barely accelerate or brake. Have you ever tried driving a car on a frozen lake? It's exactly like that.

I've been driving 20MPH around town and people still fly by me going the speed limit. I think I piss people off when I drive slow, but hey I don't wanna end up in a ditch.

It's basically one big giant sheet of ice around here thanks to the freezing rain and snow. At least GFK missed most of the BLSN like they got a little farther south. Two of my buds were stuck down in SD last night cause I-29 was closed. Don't worry about driving slow Jace, I am too, even in my big ass truck. Drive carefully everybody, its slippery out there!

First off, this is my first post ever, so hi! I've been reading the forums for a while now, but recently joined, and I guess it took a storm to get me to post.

That said, if any more first-hand accounts of the iciness are needed, I can vouch. I spend about a half hour trying to get the 1/4 inch of ice off the windows of my vehicle yesterday! I barely made it up the freeway before they closed it (Sunday).

Anybody have any cool links to stories about NWA cancellations into GFK and wrecked cars and closed freeways and the sheet of ice that covered everything? I found one in the Seattle Times, but it was pretty general.

First off, welcome NORCAL pilot! Second off, I applaud you for taking the time to clear the ice off your windows...I can't tell you how many people I have seen the past couple days with ice on their windows who didnt bother to try to scrape/defrost it off before driving.

EDIT: If you're on facebook, join our Jetcareers facebook group.

HAHA! I just got back from Target/Best Buy/Columbia Mall area. I had to do the same thing -- clear the ice off. MAN, it sucks! It really did take like a half an hour to get enough ice off to safely drive. The ice scraper is practically useless until the inside of the car gets warm enought to slightly loosen the ice. Even then, it was a pain to get off. The car probably weighed a couple hundred pounds more with all that ice stuck to the body.

Okay Jason...go ahead and tell us how nice it is to have a garage

LOL! I really do feel for you guys who have to scrape off the ice. I still plug my car in to make sure the oil is not SLUDGE when I crank it in the cold morning. (when it's thick sludge you can just imagine the piston walls carved out with grooves from metal to metal contact!)

The interstate was not that bad at all. I could still go 60-70 on it with all season tires. All season tires suck at everything! Half ass dry traction, half ass wet traction, half ass ice traction. They're the compromise to buying the proper tires.

Really, the only problems I had were when coming up on a line of cars, I'd slow down to like 40 and then some tool would decide to move out in the left lane damn near right in front of me to pass someone. ARRRG!!! There wasnt going to be any of this swerving in the ditch crap. If I couldnt get stopped, they were gona get rear ended. I guess driving behind someone for 15 minutes and waiting till there's a car coming up on you is the pristine time to pass.

All the city roads are pretty bad still. I dont mind all ice or all snow, its these random surprises that come while your braking for a stop light that bother me.

All the parking lots still have snow and ice on them!!!!! Oooooh yeah! (evil face) Who wants to go on a freak out hell ride of death?
