Default Jace

Hey Jace, as I recall you once had a thread on here that was about the battery light on your computer blinking red even when the battery was full or plugged in or something like that... What was the problem?? Mine is doing that right now... and I'm pretty sure that was you that said something about it...

Oh yes, our quality $450 per semester LEASED laptops. Actually it was alternating between green and red. Here is a video I made because the stupid outsourced people at Dell didn't know what was wrong with it, so I posted the video here and was told it was the battery failing:

www.jasonevart.com/dellsucks.wmv

Turns out it was the battery failing. I have so far gone through 4 batteries. All you do is go into Clifford (or is it Odegard? I get the two mixed up) on the first floor and they have a huge box full of brand new batteries readily available...because they all too often go out.

Let me know if it worked out!

You guys, too? Northern Michigan University (the nation's first ThinkPad University! Yeah! ) did the same thing to us back in '99. Thank God I was grandfathered out because I was graduating. One of my majors was art, so I had a laptop for digital photoediting that could eat the ThinkPad's alive . . . but they wouldn't have cared.

"That'll be $500 per semester and, no, you can't keep it for the summer. Have a nice day."

Yeah. I'll give you a nice day . . .

they're back to dells now?

I had a brand new gateway and it was an alright machine.
I got off four a couple years without a laptop, they didn't get them in early enough for my freshman year then kind of forgot about me until they began enforcing the "we'll drop you from your class with no laptop" rule.
I bought my own and used it for 3 or 4 semesters

From what I hear, the gateways before the ones we have now were terrible. Really really hot, not really capable of anything. I actually like these. I dont know if 450 a semester is worth it but I can run FS 2004 with full graphics and no gliches. Also can run far cry and half life 2. Cant quite run half life 2 with full graphics but dang close. I wish they made descent video cars for laptops. Thats the only draw back I see. They're very capable at running most complex games. Battlefield 2 would be a joke on these though.

I've been through 4 hard drives. First one lets just say I had "issues" with it. The second one crapped out when it froze and I removed the battery to shut it down. I guess thats not good. The third one just crapped out on its own. I went through the first 2 in september last year. haha

Im curious to see what we're getting for next year. I just hope I can transfer all my por, I mean music, to the next one.

The gateways sucked. The Dells are pretty good. As far as the cost is concerned with these laptops...if anything breaks on them, they fix it. It would cost me tons of money and lost time if I had a computer that I owned and had issues with.

Multiply $450 by 10 semesters (5 years of aviation) and ask yourself again if that additional amount over the $1200 laptop cost is worth it to contribute to repairs. $4500 for a laptop you DON'T EVEN GET TO OWN is not worth it.

$450 a semester, holy crap My high school charges $50 a year for these awesome Dells, they are so much better than the Apples that are also offered.

$450 is a little steep to spend for a computer in a year but no one said aviation is cheap. Flitestar takes the biggest chunk of that next to the laptop itself. of course most people don't really use it until 222 if ever but they should. Doing planning by hand for a flight that gets weathered 1,2,3 or 10 times gets kinda old when you can do it in a few min on flitestar. Another reason they are so expensive is because most people beat them into hell. Gotta love that mentality " i will beat the crap out of this computer to show those bastards" then they raise the price of it by another $50. I know of some computers that met their fate due to half a bottle of jack, sitting in the middle of a body slam, and one used as an all out drunken frisbee. No questions asked.

Flightstar costs $99. That's the ONLY additional program installed on this computer. I don't think Flightstar takes up a big chunk at all. All other programs, everyone has anyways.

UND will LOVE to say in there stupid accents "oh jeees, well donchya knooooow it's got all this software on it... yah nooo, Microsoft paint, calculator, notepad...Internet Exploder. Here in North Dakota we just discovered this cool technology called laptops, so we are going to over use it to the point that it's counter-productive and make students think they really need it so we can rape them for some more money...donchya know!"

I had no problems with my gateway, but worked down there for awhile so I got a brand new one fresh from the box and configured it myself

their flitestar license is a little shady. I don't remember seeing that they had enough site keys in their account for ALL those machines, even the CAP doesn't get a site license for their flitestar machines.....

and uh, flitestar IFR is a BIT more than 99 bucks, 99 bucks will buy you ONE navdata update, maybe.

I'm just cracking my ass off, seriously. LOL LOL.

Gotta love ripping on the accent. Not many people have it here at UND though. It probably has to do w/ the fact that like 90% of UNDers are Minnesotans, haha.
That movie "Fargo" is just ridiculously exaggerating the accent though. Too funny, despite it being a waste of time to watch.

You've obviously never met anyone from 'da Yoooo-peee of Mitch-ee-gan, eh?' Now THERE's an accent.

The keyboard on these laptops suck! The textured keys are almost worn off to the point where its smooth as a babys bottom on my spacebar. Oh yeah, I hope we have a way bigger hard drive with the next equipment upgrade. You can only fit so much music, files, apps, and videos on this tiny pos HD.

Get an external HD. I got a 120GB one at Best Buy when they were having some sale for REALLY cheap. Plus I got like $50 back in rebates! I can't even get close to filling up 160GB now. Plus, when we get the new laptops, I will just move all of my stuff to the external.
