You're friend is correct. All the dorms at UND are singles, so you get your own private room, bathroom, and kitchenette. Brand new and very luxurious. They are quite large units with central heating and a/c. Most dorm rooms have underground parking, so parking is never a problem.

The food, let me tell ya about the food. It is just amazing. UND's food service department has teamed up with Olive Garden, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, Chili's, Benihana's, and Tony Roma's, to provide many dining options.

You gotta realize that this is the midwest, and in the midwest people do not care about luxuries as much as you and I from the west coast do. All the UND dorms are no more luxury than a jail cell with cinderblock walls.

If you want to save money, get your own apartment with a friend (2 bedroom - split the costs), cook your own food, and live with basic necessities. Basic necessities include but are not limted to: having a garage to park your car in, having your OWN washer/dryer in the apartment, having your own CLEAN bathroom free of jizz-covered shower floors, central heating and a/c, and being able to study anytime of the day without having to hear loud and obnoxious people at 3am in the morning because the RA's won't give a crap about shutting them up.

LOL...nasty. I've never actually lived in the dorms, but I've spent quite a bit of time in them with other friends. I would go insane.

Default Adobe's

What you gotta realize Bigbird is that these folks in the Midwest are uncivilized and live in grass huts! They are not used to these expensive things that we have on the west coast such as water, electricity and illegal immigrants. These grass huts are far inferior to the Adobe's that we all live in down in southern Cali. Don't forget that all of them are fat despite Minnesota being the healthiest state in the country (check it) and don’t forget that they are all poorer than us on the west coast despite Minnesota having a higher household income than every state on the west coast besides Cali which is comparable(check it). Granted UND isn't in Minnesota but it might as well be! The purpose of my rant is that I’m sick of everyone’s negative stereotypes of the Midwest. "There is nothing to do in North Dakota, I would rather be home." What the hell is the difference of sitting on the internet in North Dakota or at home! Yes living in apartments is nicer especially as a freshman if you are an introvert hermit.

Ut oh, I better be quick to mention that Minneapolis/St Paul is NOT included in the stereotypes of the Midwest. Minneapolis rocks! I wish I lived there.

Now I don't know if I'm correct, but I would image that the only reason why in Minnesota the household income is proportionately similar to Cali is because of Minneapolis. A large urban city such as that should be able to skew the statistics enough.

eh, the dorms are actually ok. Unless you're a real priss, they're livable. Yeah it sucks not being able to study there, but a 5 minute walk to the library or union wont kill you.

Yeah, I hate north dakota like 90% of the other people that come to school here from other places, but its livable. Dorms are going to suck everywhere you go, be a man and deal with it, its part of the college experience. Teaches you how to live in less than ideal conditions, deal with idiots, and most of all it taught me to appreciate the little things. I met tons of friends in the 3 years I lived in the dorms that I still keep in touch with. Yeah, sometimes it sucked, but I think it was a great experience that everybody in college should go through.

I do live off campus now, but that's mostly because my lalst roomate was absolutely gross and I dont even want to take the chance of ending up with another guy like him. Here's the details since I know somebody is gonna ask.

He was a 35 year old dude who smoked like a chimney. Even though he never smoked in the room, everything he owned absolutely reeked. And since we shared the same room, that made everything of mine stink. That wasn't even the worst part. Another thing is he had nine (9, no that's not a typo) DUIs and finally lost his license with the last one. Again, not the worst part...here's the worst part. He spent 90% of his time on internet chat rooms trying to get college age girls to call him. When they finally would call him on his cell, he would dissapear into the bathroom....I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt that maybe he was just using the restroom (still nasty while you're on the phone), or going in there so I didn't have to hear his conversation...but lets just say he left some evidence in there on a couple occasions....friggin gross.

People of the midwest dont need all the cushy creature comforts that most people need, but I think that's part of the reason I like people from here so much. They're not afraid to get their hands dirty if need be, they work hard, they're trustworthy as hell (for the most part), and most of all they dont complain much. They're happy for what they DO have and dont need a 2 car garage, they aren't too good to share laundry facilities with other people, and they make some great friends.

I think 1-2 years is enough. Although, if you have a good room mate, its just fine living in a dorm. My room mate last year was awsome. I had no problem staying in my room all day when the weather sucked, or there was nothing to do on campus. I knew day one when I called him over the summer that it was going to work out just fine.

This year is another story. Second year in the dorms and its totally opposite of last year. I called kid over the summer and his lazy tone in his voice kinda made me cringe. I blew it off hoping he just talked like that. I happend to mention that I was bringing up a huge entertainment center.(this is where problems start) He wasnt showing up till Sunday and I was moving in the Friday before. So he shows up on Sunday and HES NOT GOING TO LOFT HIS GOD DAMN BED!!!!! Kind of understandable becaus he has one arm, but I have no problem climbing up there with one arm. Hes just a lazy bastard. So now we have the TV on top of the fridge by the window. This now makes my lofted bed with futon underneat totally worthless, also my surround sound stereo and PS2. Hes a socialogy major.(whatever the hell you do with that) This isnt as bad as Screaming_Emu's experiance, but its barely a livable situation.

Thank god Im moving out with a couple friends next semester. Im not sure I could put up with this for an entire year. Especially that 4 week stretch when you cant really do much of anything outside.

I guess if you always have a good room mate, the dorms are just peachy. If not, it can be hell. It is good motivation to get the hell out of your room more when your room sucks to be in. But I dont like that.

To everyone from California, GET OVER YOURSELF!!!!!!

I relocated from beautiful San Diego, Del Mar if you want to be specific. I enjoyed the big city life and intend to return. I spent 5 years at UND, 2 of which were in the dorms. I met most of my very good friends my whole college career in the dorms. Grand Forks is no metropolis, but if you understand that you are going to the midwest and not the damn country club you'll be ok. Enjoy some of the differences of the ways of life. It will open your eyes, if you let it, to a new type of people. Remember, that first wonderful regional job might put you in a podunk town too. Mine did, and I'm glad I had the UND experience to prepare myself. Just because you are from San Diego, or some other big city, you are not any better than the person who grew up in Grand Forks, you just have different experiences.

Oh, and nobody cares how nice your car is, especially when you get that great new job when you graduate.

Dorms are ok if you have your own single room, which I did during the spring semester. Otherwise, I think it's ######. I was in a university apt this summer, and it was cheaper than staying in the dorms. The only reason I'm still in the dorms is that I like being around people 24/7. Bad thing about the dorms is that the rooms are tiny, and you can't put your music as loud as you want to. Otherwise, well...

I was just thinking that yesterday about how well Grand Forks should prepare me for living in any part of the country. I actually think that I will be extremely happy to move to a town that gets snow only in December through February as opposed to October through April, since most of the rest of the country is like that (as far as snow). Getting into the regionals will require that I'm prepared to live anywhere, which I am.

In spite of the negatives I've been pointing out about Grand Forks, I really must recognize positive things that I take for granted. Grand Forks has almost non-existant crime and has a relatively low cost of living. It's also a great place to go to school because there are hardly any distractions. People are definately very polite and more willing to provide assistance to a complete stranger than many parts of this country.

While I know I may be offending some people who really have a deep appreciation or love for Grand Forks, I must say that it's just a way for me to deal with living in a different environment that I am not used to. I've already gotten quite used to it and will try to be more positive about the good things that this place actually has to offer. It is true that with a really great circle of friends, any place can be livable.

Never lived in the dorms

GFK is pretty cheap, I think I was paying 360 for a 2 bd 1 bath apartment in the ghetto behind the corner of wash and 32nd
It was no legacy, but it was less than half (lived there too in a 1bdroom)

Oh, did have friends that lived in the on-campus apartments, those were pretty nice if you can qualify, and cheap. I think her 1bdrm was like 220/mo but didn't have A/C

Yeah we're bassackwards. Due to genetic mutations, we prefer to live in towns where a home doesn't cost as much as a Cessna Citation X, an acre yard is the norm rather than the $2,000,000 exception, people smile when you walk past them on the street, the water is clear, the air isn't choked with smog, and a 5 mile drive across town doesn't take 2 hours.

I've lived in CA. And I've lived in the midwest. As much as I liked the mountains and the coast, I'll take the Great Lakes, the people, and the Northern outdoors of the upper midwest any day. But if you want to live in a place where there's a well documented water shortage . . . and more than 50% of the daily water usage is used to make the ostentacious and unnecessary lawns greener, be my guest! Just know that the next time some lawmaker from CA tries to pipe Lake Superior across the country to water his favorite golf course, he'll have to get past a whole lot of hunting rifles first!
