Anybody have any suggestions of good places to get a job in Grand Forks? What are the most sought after jobs with the best pay in town? I am looking for something pretty flexible that would not interfere with my flying/class during the summer. Any suggestions?

My roomate just got a job at Lowes. $7.75 and sounds like he really likes it. Not sure how flexible they are though. I'm coaching for the club soccer team here in town, pays well for a summer job, and I get to do something that I enjoy. |

Erik, it's very difficult to find a decent job in Grand Forks. What kind of work experience do you have? I would recommend getting a job as a busser and then move up to a server when you are legally allowed to serve alcohol. Servers will make not too much less than they do at a comparable restaurant in California. People from the midwest (no offense to anyone from the midwest) do not tip as well as people from the west coast. It's just a different culture here, not necessarily "bad". If you want a retail or Starbuck's job, you will have to adjust to making $6.50 an hour, unlike in CA where you'll make $8-10. To give you an idea of how wages are here, after $45,000 worth of training and you get to make $8.65 an hour as a UND flight instructor - the good thing is when you graduate, the pay goes way up. |

Also, cost of living in Grand Forks is very high (for what you get here my apt should be $450). I pay $790 for a 2-bedroom/2-bath apartment with a 2-car garage and paper-thin walls that would cost $1000 where you live in Sacramento, CA. Go to salary.com and do a cost-of-living report. You will find that the cost of living in Grand Forks, ND is actually 12% higher than Sacramento, CA! To give you an idea of cost of living, in San Diego I paid $1300 of rent for a new 2-bed/2-bath condo with a garage...professional stainless steel appliances, 18" tile throughout, brand new everything...and it was 5 minutes from the beach. BUT, you think $1300 is a lot...well salaries are a quite a bit higher in San Diego too, so even though there is a higher cost of living, your proportionate income/living-cost ratio won't be that much more due to higher salaries to compensate. |

Do a lot of people want to work at the airport? I think I remember that kids wanted to work as a baggage handler for the northwest flights or somethin. Can you get a job as a dispatcher?

[/ QUOTE ] Finding a good paying job in Grand Forks isn't very easy, although there are a few jobs that pay in the $10-15/hr range, such as FedEx or being a school bus driver for the local school district. I think getting a job with Northwest at the airport is pretty hard. As far as working as a dispatcher for UND, it really isn't all that exciting as someone might think, but a lot of student's want to work there. I've been with Dispatch for 3 years now, just because it is a paying job, you meet and get to interact with a lot of different people and it is a pretty flexible schedule. Pay isn't all that good either, unless you've been there for a long time or you are a supervisor. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! |

I don't think he is hiring dispatcher's right now, most of the hiring was done before school ended last semester to cover for summer. Yes, you have to be a flight instructor in order to work as an SOF. They have a lot of responsibilities. They get paid around $9.50ish/hr. |

I would try working anywhere that you can make tips. I've averaged $50 an hour on occation because of tips. Of course, not every night is like that. Usually it's around $20 an hour.

Un-graduated instructors get $9.36 an hour. There are some requirements to be an SOF (on top of being a UND instructor). When you graduate, you pay goes up to $12 something an hour and as you earn more ratings and become qualifies to teach CFI initial, you get more money. If I were you guys, I would drive school buses. Get a commercial drivers license and go to the town. They have really flexible hours too. Those guys make a buttload of money per month. |
