Default Radar Detector

So I got my new radar detector in the mail. It works really good. I bought it after hearing cops pull you over for going barely over the limit. My flight instructor got a ticket for doing 79 on I-29...with 75 MPH speed limit.

I'm not using it to give me the "license to speed"...just to remind me to check my speed when it goes off.

Does anyone know if cops here ever use Laser? So far I've only seen a cop on I-29 with the Ka band (Radar).

That's ridiculous, you could easily get 4mph over the limit within just a few second of not checking your speed.

That's pretty stupid! UPD is the worst, though

Yeah, I live by the philosophy, "where there is no cop ther IS no speed limit". Im only slightly serious. Not in the city of course, but damnit, I would much rather drive nine hours home than friggen 12. Seriously though, I dont see it being anymore dangerous going 85 or 90 with your full attention to driving than it is to drive 65 or 75 eating, talking on the phone, and doing various other things I see people doing all the time while driving. There is a right way to speed. Man this turned into a rant somehow.

I love Iowa. There's thing called the right to speed law. If your caught speeding 10 over or less on a highway or interstate you can appeal this at the court house and as long as the weather was good and it was during the day, your good to go.

You guys ever heard of the radar detector that points to and tells you how far away the radar is coming from. I think its called the "valentine". Its expensive as hell though so its probably not worth it.

That is too awesome! That's how it should be though, if your on a long stretch of road with hardly anyone on it why can't you speed as long as you are paying good attention to the road?

As for radar detectors, that's not gonna help much if you've got a plane watching the traffic since they use timing. Before, I thought those signs on the road telling you speed detected by aircraft was a joke, that is until I started flying and hearing the callsign CHP often.

Did your instructor have a radar detector as well? One thing that almost guarantees that you'll get a ticket is having one. That's what several cops that i know have said. Even though you may be only using it "to remind yourself" if you do get caught, the cop will think you got it to willfully speed and may not let you just slip away with a warning. Also those things aren't foolproof, unless the cops here are plain lazy. Back east the cops shut off the guns until the car is just passing by and then flip them on. No warning for the driver until it is way to late.

If you want to be stealth though drive next to a semi they will reflect the wide radar band that is supposed to hit stationary objects to get your speed, so in theory your speed will read 0 because both bands will give the same return.

Yeah but what semi is going to go over your regular speed limit when their limit is at 55mph?

Yes, that is called the Valentine 1. That is the radar detector that I've always wanted, but due to it's price of $400 I do not think I have that kind of money right now. It does have a front and rear radar detection antenna, unlike the one I bought. It also has an arrow indicator of from which direction the signal is coming. My radar detector only has front radar detection and 360 degree laser detection. The V1 has front rear radar, and 360 laser.

I will be purchasing another Whistler Pro-58 (the one I bought) for the rear of my car. I will hardwire the rear one to the cigarette lighter and hardwire the front radar detector to the front vanity lights.

Agreed, but I don't usually speed. I usually just go 75 on I-29 because that's pretty fast as it is... but in city streets where the speed limit is 25 (like where they'd be 40 in Minneapolis or any other big city) I sometimes catch myself going faster... Just trying to avoid a ticket... remember, my philosphy is that a radar detector should be used for checking your speed when it goes off, in addition to always watching your speed when it does is not going off.
