Well...I've sort of been looking around for auto insurance, and have only got one quote so far. It was AAA, and they quoted me $595(6 mo.) This quote was pretty much for bare minimum coverage Equity $25,000/$50,000. Is this an average price? I was kind of shocked because I figured it would be a lot cheaper than California (where I pay $511 with 21st Century - every six months). Plus, the car I will be using is an old 4 door 93' Camry! I'm looking for the cheapest possible here. Anybody have any recommendations, or comments as to what you use?

you might consider just liability. That quote does seem a little high. My 4Runner is insured in MT and i only pay 900 a year for full coverage. I use Farm Bureau. |

Geez, I can't believe this. After calling AAA who quoted me $595 (which is $84 more than I pay in CA), I called two other insurance agencies. First State Farm: $615, then Progressive: $1392. All of these quotes are for 6 month periods and MINIMUM coverage (liability). What do you guys do about this? I just can't see how they are charging this much in ND, when I can get it for $511 in California! GRRRRR The few people I have talked to in ND seem like they are paying significantly less. Maybe there is some local insurance agency that has better deals that I don't know about.

1) Either the companies see you're from CA and automatically think you're a crappy driver or 2) you are a crappy driver and their just trying to cover their butt.

I moved from California too and I found that insurance is higher here too. The reason is that in Cali you have so many more options compared to here. I currently have Geico which was the cheapest that I found and I just did an online quote and signed up online and didn't have to go see anybody which was nice. I'd check and see what kind of price you can get with them.

Auto insurance AND even medical insurance is a LOT higher in North Dakota than it is in California. Cost of living here in Grand Forks is higher than California too (according to relative cost/earnings ratio at Salary.com). Grand Forks sucks ass! That's why I keep my California registration and insurance in CA and use my mom's address... because it's about 60% cheaper!

The North Dakota DMV said that the car isn't required to be registered as a ND vehicle (Unlike CA where you are required to resgister after 30 days), so it will be cheapest if I just remain with my current insurance agency/registration. Thanks for all of your comments! |

WOW...I take back what I just said. I thought that I would give one more insurance agency a call (the one that montanapilot recommended - "Nodak Mutual"), and what a suprise! $365 per YEAR! That's around $183 every 6 months. Sure beats the $595 every 6 months (cheapest I could find) that all the other places were charging. This is more like what I was expecting. The only catch is that I have to register the car for ND, and get a ND drivers license. But that is not a big deal. I think I will keep my CA insurance for 6 months until I can get everything straightened out with the new ND registration/license. Thanks Montanapilot!

Make the deductable amount the same and bodily injury/collision the same amounts...in order to compare if it really is cheaper. I will see if they can provide me with a better quote though. I just don't want to get rid of my California plates - don't want to be seen as a native North Dakotan! Embarrassing! LOL (half-way kidding) |

Wow, I just got a quote from Nodak Mutual. For the same exact coverage policy it would cost $2900 per year for my car. I currently pay $1138 per year on a California policy. No wonder why people flee this state when they are done graduating! Too expensive!

Seriously, I pay less than a 1000 a year for full coverage. |

[ QUOTE ] Like I said, I think they (insurance company) view drivers not from snowy states as a bad driver. [/ QUOTE ] California has more snow than North Dakota. It's a FACT. (All the Sierra Nevadas get about 15 feet of snow - try to beat that in ND). Plus, we have worse driving conditions that ND does - we have steep hills were you can be parked and your car will slide down the hill due to ice. Of course not in San Diego! But go 45 minutes east to the coastal mountains and you got a few feet of snow... |

And on top of that, it took idiots from Cali to figure out you can't park on a icy hill. That is instinct here buddy.... |

[/ QUOTE ] There are no hills here in ND You should see the ones in Colorado! They are the worst...as I saw when I visited there. But Cali drivers from the bay area of SoCal coast cannot drive in the snow - accidents all the time.Luckily I have SOME experience driving in the snow because I go up to the snow a lot in CA...so I was ok driving here in ND (other than sliding out of control into the middle of the intersection with my summer tires which are basically racing slicks!..so I bought snow tires to prevent that) |
