Grand Forks sucks. Weather is crappy, it won't get warm...blah blah blah... Can somebody tell me WHY it has to be 7 degrees on a March morning??? I was checking temperatures in Anchorage, Alaska and it's 12 degrees warmer there! And everytime I wash my car it gets dirty the second I take it back out on those crappy roads that Grand Forks has. I always took the weather in California for granted... and all the fun things to do there. I swear to god when I move back I will appreciate those amenities that I have there. California is paradise, and growing up and living there I had no idea it was until I moved to a #####ty town like Grand Forks. Ok...enough of my complaining, I was the one that chose to move here... Anyway, I am buying a house this summer here in Grand Forks. My mortgage payment should be about the same as the rent I am currently paying, as long as I keep the mortgage down to 160k. Has anyone else here bought a house here? |

About buying a house, I know a few that have bought condo's and townhomes, and it seemed to workout for them. If I had any intentions of staying here for another year (I should be out in 6 months), I'd go ahead and buy one. But for now, I'll keep renting. |

Yes, it's good to get in the real estate market as young as possible. You are literally throwing your money away to rent when you could be owning your own home for free (well, as long as the equity exceeds rate of yearly repair costs and other costs incurred with home ownership!). Appreciation rates in Grand Forks are still slow compared to other markets, but they have increased at a sharper rate the past year. I'm only going to be here for another two years but am buying a house anyway. I will keep the property and rent it out after I graduate and get the hell out of here back to California. As long as rent and property management fees don't exceed my mortgage payment, I'd hope that in a few years the equity will bring me some extra cash upon selling the property. It's especially good to buy a house when you're young because building credit is so important for doing things you want to do when you have a family... like getting low interest rate on your car loan (and even getting approved for that matter), getting low interest rate on a new mortgage, etc. |
