Im a prospective transfer student and wondering if UND aircraft are allowed to fly into known icing conditions. I know some universities dont let their aircraft do that.

None of our a/c are certified to fly into known icing. (Not sure about the Barron.) So it's not really a university policy, but an FAA mandate. *Edit* Out of curiosity what universities do you know that allow their a/c into known icing. I think the FAA might be interested... |

According to A Johnson, the Baron is certified for safety of flight.

The BE58 also has heated props, heated fuel vents, and heated stall warning vanes. It is certified for known icing, i've taken it into that. All that said, you wouldn't want to stay in the icing for a very long period, the protection is more suited to getting up above the layer and then punching back down. You should have seen the size of the ice horn that formed on the spinners of the props, the lights, the engine narcelles, and other unprotected areas. It took a while to clean it off.

We just use it for multi. They also use it to fly around University people, like the Dean of Aerospace when he wants to go golfing in St. Cloud, MN The maintenance guys get to enjoy the Baron the most |

No, he doesn't fly them! Usually the Lead Flight Instructors get to fly him around.
