I have finally decided to attend UND after months of considering other places. I chose UND because of the great aviation program and connections within the aviation industry, and I felt that they had a better program than ERAU, Western Michigan, and Purdue at a more affordable price. I will probably be starting in the summer so I can get the initial flight courses and some of the freshman courses out of the way, and so I can get the in-state residency. I won't actually be able to visit before I go up there, so I have a few questions about the campus and life at UND and in Grand Forks. What dorms/res. halls do you think are best for incoming aviation students and are there affordable apartments off-campus? What is the weather like, and would I have to bring heavy winter clothing or just a regular coat/hat/gloves? What are the "fun" things to do on campus and in GF? Thanks for answering my questions. |

The campus is ok. As far as what dorm to live in, it doesnt really matter. Some are closer to the aviation bulidings than others but you will be taking generals the first two years anyways (you will most likely be out of the dorms after 2 years). As far as apartments, they are ok. Grand Forks has no business charging what they charge but they can because UND is there. For off campus housing, your best bet is to get some people and rent a house or a portion of a house. The weathere here is what you might expect it to be. Really really cold. They spend more months heating than cooling. Sometimes you can go 4 weeks without seeing the sun. Other times its clear in a million for weeks at a time. April is a bad flying month. I always tell everyone to go to Wilsons leather and get a heavy leather jacket (mine is a leather bomber style) that has a removable liner. Wilsons also sells leather gloves that are really good. Windproof and good looking. Summer(July to August) is ok, there are more mosquitos then any other place Ive been but thats ok I guess... Fun things to do? There isnt anything in Grand Forks. All there is to do is drink, fly, and study (none of the previously mentioned should be done at the same time ). The closest big city is Minneapolis and that is 4.5 hours away.

Yup, I agree with what the rest have said. Also, get yourself in a co-ed dorm as you soon as you can. I was in West this past fall. I seriously didn't like that dorm. I've now moved into Brannon and the difference is tremendous. This is all my opinion, of course. I didn't really enjoy the time living in an all guys dorm. And, also, good choice should you decide to come this summer. |
