Hello, Last summer I attended the Aerospace Camp at UND, and let me tell you...it sold the school to me. The flight facilities, program, and campus in general is really awesome! I will be attending UND the fall semester of 2005, and I have a few questions about the summer program that is designed to give students a head start on their flying. As I understand it, there is a 6 or 9 week program that that can be completed during the summer to get the private pilot out of the way. Has anyone had any experience with this program, or have any information about it? Would it be a good idea to take part in this summer program? Is it really worth it? Also, does anyone have any opinions on what the best residence hall is for a freshmen aerospace student? Which dorms are preferred by students? Do lots of students have cars on campus? Any comments will be greatly appreciated! If you ever want to talk on IM, my screen name is Erk1000 |

We convinced him to do the summer program and I think it benefited him greatly. And yes, it is very worth it to fly here in the summer. Much more laid back and is actually warm out. Not sure how students live without one because I sure couldn't do it. |

Howdy airplanerik. The bus/shuttle system here is okay so I would say you need a vehicle, but not having to wait for the aero shuttle to get to/from the airport is probably worth having a vehicle just by itself. As far as the dorms, Dakota hall is kinda nice, but about a mile off campus. Can't really comment on any others cause thats the only one I lived in before moving off campus.

Welcome to the boards airplanerik! As mentioned already, having a car is pretty much a must, although you can find way's of getting around and I know some people that can manage without a car. As far as dorms and living on campus. Walsh, West and Smith hall are some of the more poluar dorms for freshman. I lived in Walsh for 2 year's, and I didn't like it at all. If you have any more questions, just ask |

Hi Erik, Congrats on getting accepted and choosing to come here. First thing's first...the guys here indeed convinced me to come during the summer, and I'm VERY glad to have done so. Summer time's awesome for flying for several reasons... -Weather is generally great for flying -Airplane availability is very high -You have the airport to yourself (not crowded, he he) -Instructors don't have to wear the gay uniforms, ha ha etc... What's nice about the summer time is that you are able to double up with your instructor if you ever fall behind template. You really can't do that in the fall because it's either a) your instructor is not available, or b) there aren't any planes available to fly. I kinda feel bad for those 102 students that are taking the course in the fall, because as the others have said here, weather has been very bad and stops you from flying. It's even worse for 102 students because they have 30 lessons to complete, with three stage checks, and if you get weathered for a stage check, don't expect to fly the next day with the examiner. That's what's been happening to many of the students I've spoken to. They have yet to pass their first stage check. Attending the summer session is the best thing you can do. You seriously don't realize the importance of getting things done quickly until you've actually passed the course. You get to obtain your PPL in about two and a half months time during the summer. Of all my classmates that I've spoken to from the summer that passed 102, they all seem to agree that doing this course in the summer is absolutely worth it. See, 102 is a a pretty long course, it's 5 credits. Taking it in the summer leaves a lot of time for you to dedicate yourself to flying and studying for your FAA written, oral, etc... And since financial aid requires you to have 6 credits minimum, I chose to take 103 Intro to ATC, an easy class. It seems to be a fairly popular pair of classes to take. With regards to the dorms, I stayed in Selke in the summer, and am in West as I type. They're decent dorms. One note you should take into consideration though... See... there are three dining centers. The only dining center that's open on the weekends and for late night dinner is Wilkerson. I'm pretty sure it must be a major hassle having to walk all the way from the other complexes to eat brunch, dinner on the weekends. So if I were you, I'd probably give that a thought. Another thing to consider is the fact that the Wilkerson halls have a common area on each wing, and the rooms share suites which is pretty neat. Other halls don't have a "common area." Rooms are arranged in hallways. Well, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I've added you to AIM. My screenname is angelfuree on AIM as well, so you can always catch me online. Later =) |

Hi! Thanks to everyone for your quick and helpful replies. It is really helpful getting info and insights from those of you already at UND and at the School of Aviation. Anyone have opinions about the best major (or double major) to do while gaining all the flight ratings? What seems to be working for those of you already in the program? I seem to read from just about everyone that has been through all this to forget an aviation major....the advice seems to be to major in something else besides commercial aviation but get all the flight ratings. What is the general feeling about the Aviation Business Management degree or Flight Education. Thanks again to everybody....I'm really looking forward to getting to UND this summer!! |

I switched from Commercial Aviation to Aviation Management after my sophomore year, just becuase I wanted to have something to fall back on, plus I really got interested into the airline management, marketing and operations aspect. I'd like to do both fly and work in management sometime later down the road. I have noticed that more and more students are switching from Commercial Aviation to Avit. Management, just becuase they want something to fall back on in case they loose their medical, etc. I think the Aviation Management major is a little harder than the Commercial Avit. major, just because you have to take a lot of advanced business courses. Hope this helps;-) |

Does anyone have any recommendations on what bank to use while at UND? Is there an ATM machine on campus for certain banks? Is there a Wells Fargo in town? Thanks!

I would highly recommend AVOIDING Wells Fargo. I was inundated with $198 worth of fees for making a simple mistake with a deposit. It took my a lot of fuss and time to get them to remove the fees. First I went to this lady at the Customer Service station in front of the bank (at the Columbia Street location). She only offered ro remove $33 out of $198 worth of fees. She was very rude and figured I was a young student and would not complain any further. Well, I wasn't done yet. I went over to the manager at another location and got all the fees removed. I pulled out the thousands of dollars I had in there (my loan money) and took my business to US Bank. So far US Bank has been great to me.

Hey I defiantly plan to go to Und too. Turnin the apps. in this week. Tryin to pick a dorm too. I visited it once last summer and loved it. I orginally wanted to go commercial piloting, but now i'm switching to Air Traffic Control or maybe double major. So if you guys know anyone who I could talk to that is in the ATC course now, id like talkin to them. Is there a lot of activities to do in the area, it seemed like hockey was the big thing? I hear the weather sucks, but it looked like the place for me when i visited in the summer. Where do most people work thats close? Also do u guys think the 10 meal plan is enough freshman year or is it hard to find stuff? Thanks! |

Anybody else go to last weekend's series? We played very poorly Sat but the fight was worth the cost of the ticket, IMHO. |

Hey Guys, What is the general feeling about the laptop program that UND forces you to commit to? Is it really worth the $900 per semester (or whatever it is)? What type of laptop is it, and what comes on it? Are you allowed to do anything you want to it (load music, personal programs, etc.?) Or do you have to keep default settings? Do some students bring a computer of their own? Any comments would be appreciated. |

I think all of the students now have a Dell Latitude D505. Personally, I don't like the laptop program and I don't think it's worth the $450/semester. Yes, you can use your own personal programs. You can bring your own computer, but you still have to lease a laptop as long as you are enrolled in an aviation course.

I like having a laptop for school, but it is NOT worth the $450 a semester (something like that). Way too expensive. The laptop is nice... and it doesn't matter what you do with it. I download music (didn't say illegally!) all the time...in class and out of class... I chat with AIM and Yahoo messenger during boring and easy classes (just don't do it in avation 102! You need to listen in that class).
