Default UND to get Extra300L?!?

mm... Just a rumor but... I feel it could be valid as it heard it from Vacek himself...

Apparently, The SuperDs are experiencing major airframe problems from the stress that the Acro students / team puts on the aircraft... Something about the rivets popping out / cracking near the root of the wings...

Anyways, from what i understand, We'll be getting Extra 300Ls if the tanks from a 330XL can be fitted into the 300L airframe and still stay in the Acro category.

The Super Ds will still be kept in the fleet for Spin Training and the 386s.

Anyone hear anything like this as well?

Isn't that kind of overkill though? I have no experience with UND but I have flown both super D's and a Extra and the Extra is a whole nother beast. Not really the best airplane to learn aerobatics in. Its meant for the pilot who already knows the basics and wants to compete at the extreme levels. Just seems like it would be way to much airplane for students to be learning aerobatics. With its maneuverability its just to easy for a amateur acro pilot to get himself into trouble real fast.

Wow that would be awesome, something I would love to learn in. If that is true the department!

Doubtful and if it is real, most likely there's a very short list of people who will be able to fly it. Deca's are strong. That one took those electrical wires pretty well

Aviation safety with Dana, he passed the wire around class then told us what it was.

This notion has surfaced from time to time, mostly just with us acro nuts who want the university to buy us a toy.

The Super D is a fine plane, and a kickass plane, does not a kickass pilot make.

I outscored Pitts and a few Extra pilots on a regular basis when I was competing.

Yep it was my acro/222 instructor that ended up doing that. Great pilot, some of the things we would do were unreal, but just a stupid person. The story he told was just dumb and he paid the price.

Maybe this rumor came from back in 2005. Some guy refinanced his house and bought and Extra then flew it up there to GFK and had it parked on the UND ramp. The school was flirting with him to buy it but then he got investigated by the FAA for doing aerobatics to low over "truck stop" which was one of the checkpoints for the VFR arrivals into the airport. Of course the school freaked and demanded he removed it from their ramp. After that is parked over at flight support for awhile and I never heard anything else after that.

I remember that. It was a nice looking airplane. It only sat there for a week or two before it disappeared.

Little update for you guys.

A Proposal has been written up by Michael Lents, and it seems like they are actually making an attempt at this.

Quick overview...

The Proposal suggests that the Extra will be used by the contract students for spin training, CFI spin training, Basic Acrobatics, UAV Escorting as well as a "recruiting tool" at airshows.

EST price is ~$350/hr (SuperD -150$/hr @Fall2009) However, it suggests that it can complete the average Spin lesson with a shorter F.T when compared to the SuperD or the Gutted 172s due to it's superior rate of climb. (not to mention the superior ability to demonstrate spin entries and recoveries)

That would be interesting but again I still think it is overkill. I have flown both and the extra 300 is meant for the pilot who already knows how to do aerobatics and wants to go to the extreme. In the super d you will learn the proper techniques to do the maneuvers correctly. In the extra 300 its easy to get away with bad techniques because things happen so fast.
