I'm curious too, I haven't heard anything about it. Maybe I'll hear more about it in Safety.

There are pics out there and all Flight Instructors have the pics but can not display because of legalities of the incident in question and also the fact that there is "on going" investigation. All that matters is the person flying the aircraft walked away from the incident. -Farva

So it was just an incident not accident. Good thing that no one got hurt.

All I know is in the warrior, if you're landing on the second centerline stripe, you pretty much need to be doing a short field landing to make that taxiway. Regular landing, touching down on anything farther down from the second stripe, forget about it. Unless you have figured out how to trail brake an airplane without tipping it over. Either way, all three parties are pretty equally at fault. The student is a fault, because well he's PIC. The controllers at fault for having the asinine idea to tell a first solo pilot to even attempt to make that taxi way. The instructor is at fault for not teaching the student that he can go against an ATC instruction. I agree though, the important thing is the guy walked away with out injury. It'll be a learning experience for all involved and hopefully all of us.

instructors, PLEASE teach your students its GOOD to use your own head and make the right call! (if in fact, the student was trying too hard to comply with an 'unable' type instruction) for those who didnt hear about it: first solo tower instructs green to exit alpha 2 green departs the surface rounding the corner onto alpha 2 and comes to a stop in the taxiway (runway?) sign. i cant help but feel a little bad for the student though, man what a rough way to start off your flying life!

sidenote: from threshold to A2 is about 3 times farther than threshold to C1 on the other side... theres been really windy days when i was feeling a bit sassy and was doing my damnedest to execute the 'perfect' short field landing for that mystical charlie one challenge and i cannot for the life of me figure out how there would be any SAFE way of doing that. i hear its been done though. (mostly unrelated discussion/hijack!)

| Old Skool | ive had some pretty stiff headwinds too but im thinking it has to be darn near 30kts to hit that turnoff. and hitting the pavement in the first 20 feet. and be at a VERY full stall touchdown. aaaand...call me a pansy but id rather not eat my words and end up in the grass driving up to threshold!

whats more fun than the charlie 1 challenge is taking a Cadet (obviously not UND's) to Minto, the concrete portion of the runway is only 2600x20, but you need to call for permission first

Trick for me was to drag it in with power and no flaring. Chop the power right a few feet before touch down and clamp on the brakes but don't lock them up. Minto is a fun airport. I always took the DECA up there while teaching tailwheel students. Good times. | |
