Default Student Services - Housing / Per Diem

Student Services Main Site Page:

Information Regarding Per Diem:

List of FAA Housing Options:

Academy Bus Route Schedule:

(Click the links above to access the information indicated)

For those without PowerPoint to read "Information Regarding Per Diem" here it is in text form.

Here's what the Student Services New Hire Orientation says... don't know if it's the latest and greatest though!
  • You will be reimbursed for the following travel expenses to attend classes at the MMAC in OKC.
    • Travel from your home of record to OKC
    • Per Diem for your living expenses during your stay in OKC
    • Travel from OKC to your home of record at the completion of training.
  • Students who do not have to travel to OKC (50 miles or less) will not be placed on travel orders and do not qualify for for travel entitlements.
  • While you are in training you will be reimbursed a fixed rate of $79.20 per day.
    • Rate based on 60% of the OKC locality rate.
    • Covers meals, lodging, local transportation, phone calls, and any other incidental expenses.
    • You will not be reimbursed for mileage or gasoline while training in OKC.
    • You must stay in commerical lodging to receive the fixed rate.
  • AT New Hire Students can submit their vouchers to the Travel office in 15 or 30 day increments.
  • Completed travel voucher must be submitted to the Travel Office for reimbursement. Do not use GovTrip to submit vouchers.
  • You must submit a Travel Voucher (SF 1012) to be reimbursed for expenses.
  • Travel questions should be directed to Dana Holliday (405-954-2695) or Michelle Beltran (405-954-7274) in the Travel Office. Do not depend on hearsay or rumor. This could impact your pocketbook!
  • WELCOME TO THE FAA! Enjoy your stay in OKC and good luck in your new career!

also just another note with regards to housing.

I did some research on craigslist.org and found that housing in OKC downtown may possibly be cheaper by leasing//renting on your own than going through the websites listed above... given transportation and everything else works out as well

it's was a simple rate comparison and I posted it here

i hope this is the case, or I'm in a lot of trouble. I don't think i could afford 50+ bucks a day for living in one of their corporate mumbo jumbos!

It is the case. I was tired of everyone guessing about how per diem works, so I called Student Services to get a final answer. I asked them about staying with a fraternity brother who I have't met and they said that was questionable. But how would they ever know?

Answer to your question is in the first post on this thread. I went ahead and highlighted it for you. So, if your less than 50 miles away from MMAC then your out of luck on the per diem.

**PER DIEM / HOUSING PAYMENT UPDATE**

Air Traffic Control Specialist
New Hire Lodging - Credit Card Payment Process

The FAA Academy is implementing a policy to pay for commercial lodging costs for Air Traffic Control Specialist (ATCS) New Hires (ONLY applies to ATCS New Hires) attending Courses 50043, 50143, 50046, 50145, 50146, 50043001, 50055001, or 50034 if also attending one of the other courses listed.

This applies only to lodging costs which can be charged to a government credit card.
This will be effective for class start dates on or after 10/01/08.

The maximum allowable daily lodging rate is $49.80, not including taxes. You will be responsible for charges in excess of this amount. If you are unable to locate lodging within the allowable amount, please contact Student Services at 405/954-3081 for assistance.

The instructions and guidelines for housing, meals, and incidental entitlements effective with class start dates on or after 10/01/08 are listed below. If you require assistance or clarification, please call Student Services at 405/954-3081.

Instructions:

1. Call the lodging provider to secure a reservation. You may access the list of Hotels or Apartments on the Student Services Website. You may be required to provide a personal credit card number to hold the reservation. If you do not have the means to do this, please contact Student Services at 405/954-3081.

2. Once you have secured a reservation, forward your lodging confirmation to ATCStudenthousing@faa.gov. Student Services will then contact the lodging provider to convert the authorization from your personal credit card to a government credit card and provide an FAA confirmation number for payment.

3. You will not need a receipt from the lodging provider at the end of your stay since you will NOT be claiming these costs on your travel reimbursement voucher.

Meals and Incidentals

You will receive $30.60/day for meals and incidentals. You may submit your initial travel reimbursement voucher 15 days after arriving at the Academy and monthly thereafter.

Important Notes and Guidelines:

FAA will not pay for lodging reservations that have not been assigned an FAA Confirmation Number.

FAA will pay only for lodging accommodation costs with the government credit card. All other costs including meals, incidentals, phone calls, laundry service, movie rental, entertainment, damages, etc. will need to be guaranteed by the student’s PERSONAL credit card.

Exceptions to Credit Card Payment Process

1. If your lodging provider does not accept credit cards, you will not be included in the credit card payment process. If you will be at the Academy for at least 16 class days, you will receive a total of $80.40/day for lodging, meals, and incidentals, regardless of your lodging cost. You must submit a valid receipt for your lodging expenses. You may submit a travel reimbursement voucher 15 days after arriving at the Academy and monthly thereafter.

2. If you elect to stay with friends or family, you will not be included in the credit card payment process. You will receive $30.60/day for meals and incidentals only. You may submit a travel reimbursement voucher 15 days after arriving at the Academy and monthly thereafter.

3. Local residents (50 miles or less from the Academy) will not be included in the credit card payment process and will receive mileage to and from the Academy only. You may submit a travel reimbursement voucher 15 days after arriving at the Academy and monthly thereafter.

Ok, sorry if this is a stupid/obvious question-- but how many "travels" are we allowed to take and be reimbursed for? Do they pay for us to fly home every weekend? This is something I haven't spent much thought on, so if anyone can explain more clearly, it'd be much appreciated

What they mean by 'travel reimbursement' is the allowable general items you can be reimbursement for while at the academy (e.g., food & other incidentals) that would fall under the per diem you get. They don't pay for you to travel home back and forth at leisure. It seems that per diem in the new FY will no longer be at a fixed rate if housing is being paid directly through this new government credit card program (i.e., you'll only receive what you're actually charged for housing up to $49.80)

Seems kinda unfair that some people could pocket several hundred dollars more per month just because their housing doesn't accept credit cards. i know from the government's perspective we are all being "paid" equally, but come on, if this program is not optional I'm finding a place that won't take credit cards ASAP.

Agreed...along those lines of equal pay it would be nice if per diem remain fixed like before and those who are able/willing to economize (e.g., get roomates, etc) have something to show for it

This sucks cause we are losing a little extra $ per day. Seems like I would be making an extra 10 dollars a day the old way of per diem because if I do get invited I want to stay at apple tree. If I am there for 16 weeks then thats 1120 bucks...

Here is something else about this that may have an impact......

If the FAA will pay up to 50 bucks with no pocketing of the access, what is to stop a bunch of people from booking 2 bedrooms just for the space?

There is a good ammount of the FAA approved housing that has 2 bedrooms for around 40 - 50 a day, and sounds like the FAA would cover it.

But - there would of course be no point in getting a roomate - because there would be no savings to the student under this plan.

Who is to say that doesnt make it REAL difficult to find a place to live a few months from now?

we will probably all be shackin up at the Y before this is over.....

Ok....I called Student Services to see about the new per diem

According to them, as of today using the government credit card is not mandatory. Therefore, if you decide not to use the government credit card you will receive $80.40/day for lodging and meals. What you do not use for lodging or meals you get to pocket. If you have to use a government credit card you will only receive up to $49.80/day for lodging, what you don't use, you lose. You will receive $30.60/day for meals and incidentals regardless, whatever you don't use you get to pocket.

The above terms and conditions are subject to change…. as in, one day it could become mandatory

I talke to Linda in student services and she told me it was mandatory. I didn't get an answer at the 954-3081 number so I called 954-3923 and she said the only expections are those listed on the flyer.

Update: I did get in touch with Janet at the 3081 number and I stand corrected. It is not mandatory but is only for those who need help up front. She said we would submit receipts every 30 days for housing but if you turn in receipts you will get the full $49.80/day for housing plus the full $30.60/day for meals/incidentals. So I guess we are able to keep the entire $80.40 per diem if you choose to. The only downside is that you will be responsible for your housing for the first 30 days.

So I guess we are able to keep the entire $80.40 per diem if you choose to. The only downside is that you will be responsible for your housing for the first 30 days.

What the hell!!! This is stupid!!! After I read your post I decided to call student services again. They told me it is mandatory unless your residence does not accept credit cards. So now I have received two differnet answers from SS.
