    More Govt. Fear -

TSA to implement body cavity searches next?

Reuters News Service published today - "Three U.S. officials said counter-terrorism agencies report that other doctors in Yemen are prepared to surgically load bombs into the organs of militants.......Authorities [ found an anal ] bomb virtually identical to one which Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab [the Underwear Bomber], a Nigerian militant who had been studying Arabic in Yemen, used to try to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day 2009."

The possibility of cavity hidden explosives, either swallowed or hidden in an orifice has been around for over a decade and used a few times. There has not been a real concern thus far because it's believed that these devices could be picked up by screening/scanning and many times from powder residue as well. It's also thought that the body would certainly absorb some of the impact itself and thus lessening damage to any surrounding area and also you can only pack so much explosive material into a human body and keep the person alive for any length of time. That is why you see suicide bombers wearing vests or other outside garments that can hold much larger amounts of explosives and do greater damage. At least this is my understanding, from what I have been told from someone who knows far more about this than I do. Every year or so some media resource reports this and everyone jumps on it. Then it seems to fade away. There were stories going around about this last Summer, actually and then in the Fall of 2010. We can never fully protect ourselves against every possible threat on the planet. The airport is the last stage in the chain of events of "protection" . It's really up to intelligence agencies to foil such plots and monitor them. Maybe people will want CT scans next on their way to Wally World. lol

Thats the thing. It almost seems like there are those who want to try and "protect" us from everything, and in trying to do so, we get these draconian security measures that really don't accomplish much other than window dressing. But, with no consistent new threats....real or perceived......there will be no new equipment or extra dollars for some of these agencies who are there to provide the public "security." As the old saying goes, "No bucks, no Buck Rogers". And the self-licking ice cream cone continues.

Everybody knows the real threat are those airline crews and their nail clippers and Gillette razors, anyway. :)

Exactly. There is also the issue of profiling (which we really do not do in this country, amazingly enough) . Look at/for people and not for devices. Every layer of so called "protection" and "safety" (and this goes for everything- not just at airports) that the government imposes on it's citizens, erodes away more of our freedoms and rights and in the end often does little of what is promised it will accomplish, but it diminishes and affects our lives in ways large and small. It gets to the point of being asinine and ridiculous at some point. How much control is enough?

Don't forget the damn tins of tuna!!! lmao

The second best thing that could ever happen to this industry (outside re-regulation) after scrapping every last flavor of RJ and Q would be to return screening to exactly what it was on 9/10/01.
