As a retired Army Aviator and someone who sat on three accession boards I recommend you go meet a few Army aviators and get a LOR from more than one of them. I can guarantee the board will look at your geographic location and how far it is to an active duty, reserve or national guard facility and wonder why you didn't go. Could be the difference between a 5.5 and 5.0 point score on the board. Very few people I have ever seen got 6.0 vote scores from any members.

Another site to check out is www.aptap.org (Army Pilots to Airline Pilots). You are sort of going in reverse but still some good guys there that can help.

I had this in mind, the only problem I see is that if I have a CWO write me a LOR without knowing me very well then it really doesn't say much about my character as compared to someone who has known me for years. Of course I respect your advice and would like to look into doing it, but how can I go about meeting with an army aviator and not look like im begging them for a LOR?

BTW I see you are from Amherst, NY...I grew up there.

    Hey Spike,

Yeah, It's been a long and harried road, to completing my flight packet and my battalion level board. Even when I believed there was absolutely no way for there to be another speed bump, between the battalion board and the USAREC board, there was and it's left me waiting for my first look to finally come around on the 15th of March. The waiting is excruciating, especially now that it's just waiting and no moving onto the next step. I started my packet in the beginning of July and I had already completed my ASVAB. So, it's a long process and I know others have waited longer, but when people tell you it can be 2 to 3 months, don't believe them. With the Army or any large bureaucracy, there's going to be little choke-ups in paperwork and what not.

I have no idea why I kind of rambled about all of that. Basically, I am still waiting and hope to hear great news on the 15th, and I wish you much luck in your packet completion and hopeful selection.

I am wishing any and everyone who applies for WOFT much success. I tried on far too many occasions to be accepted and failed. . .not because of lack of effort, but because I couldn't get enough waivers to allow me to fly.

Such is life; such is the system in which we operate. To all who are accepted, I am proud!

    :yeahthat:

When I was enlisted I applied for WOCS/WOFT and Ft. Rucker lost my flight physical THREE times! I had an O-6 who was nice enough to investigate for me and even he couldn't get it found. Ended up going the RLO route instead because I got fed up with the set backs.

    3 days until judgement day!

    Hey all,

I just wanted to let everyone know that my packet will finally be reviewed for the first time in only three incredibly long days. The last few weeks of waiting have been so excruciating. I feel like i'm losing my mind, haha not really, but I can't wait to find out. Monday, will either be the best day ever or a slap of humility to the face.

Is anyone else's packet up for review? Good luck.

Good luck, Seth! I just completed my packet and it'll be review here shortly. They didn't give me a date or anything... Did your recruiters tell you how the review process works? Apparently, the battalion just gives their recommendations to a national review board who then picks people. Hoping I get in... sick and tired of all the airline/on-demand/cargo bull schick going on. Plus a job with the government, particularity the military ain't going anywhere.

I said it on vertical reference and I will say it again, congrats!

Based on your stats, you and I have similar test scores so I'm hoping if you can make it, hopefully I can too. Expect a PM, I have a million questions I would like to ask you if you don't mind.

Excellent to hear. I still remember vividly the day I got the phone call. I could hardly finish work that day. I was sooo pumped. The best advice I can give you is to take the training one day at a time. Don't get caught up comparing yourself to the guys ahead of you ... it will come to you as you receive the training and practice. If you're going to regular basic training I'd keep this quiet as much as possible ... don't make yourself a target for the jealous.

Thanks guys! I am so pumped, every time i think about it I'm like wow I'm actually doing it. It's a good feeling.

Flying bison and anyone else, I would be glad to answer any questions you might have.

Lowerlevelhell, I seemly to be oddly fascinated with Chinooks lately, there's just something about it that attracts me, and I can't quite put my finger on it. Anything would be awesome though!

    Shipping out SOON!!!!

    Hey all,

I just swore in today, and apparently there was a cancellation or something, so I will be leaving on April 1st to Jackson SC for basic training. I'm really excited, but a little bit nervous. I'm still kind of in shock right now, any last minute advice would be great.

    -Seth

PS-Spike, I didn't forget to reply, i'm just super busy with a lot of stuff to do before i leave. I'll try to make time to write back though.

    Re: Shipping out SOON!!!!

i went through basic training at Fort Knox. I can try to provide you a wealth of information. I just did it last year, so I was part of the new and improved basic training program (less long distance running, no baonet training, more close quarters training, urban and IED training)

when you call, we can talk about both things (flight school process and basic). And I will give you my address, so you can write to me, and I'll write back. You will get an address within 2 weeks of getting there. 1st week is reception (get medical stuff done, get your uniform items etc...)

    congrats again!!!

There are a handful here that can help.

    Kiowapilots.com isn't a bad source.
