WOFT, High School to Flight School packet questions

Like you said don't sound full of yourself. Also don't tell them the sole reason you want to join is to be a pilot. That may not go over well with some.

I'd like to give you some advice from my interview but the Major who headed up the board had a wife in labor at the time resulting in my board lasting all about 2 minutes. He must have put in a good word for me though.

Unless that person putting a good word for you at Rucker has wears stars on his collar I don't think it would help much.

Thanks for the reply. I am a little worried about the battalion board, because from what I hear they ask a lot of questions about high school and about your prior successes. I didn't do well in high school, and I never was really involved in extracurricular activities, I guess you could say I was distracted by other things. I've scored well though and I've put everything into this packet to the best of my ability. I'm just not sure how I should answer questions about prior success or my past. I'm confident that I can do this, I'm just concerned that stuff will come back to haunt me. I was just wondering if anyone knew if that stuff really weighs into their decision or has any suggestions on how to present myself differently because of it. Thanks!!!!

FWIW my poor high school performance was redeemed by doing a couple solid years in college (prior to applying). If you get shot down, at least consider this alternative. By the time you are in college, most commissioning programs don't really care about what you did or didn't do in high school. Just a thought!

Okay, one final question, am I supposed to submit a hand written copy of my letter "Why I Want to Be An Army Aviator"? I keep getting mixed replies. I guess it won't hurt just to do it right? I'll put the typed version in too.

Just go with a typed version, there is nothing left that isn't digital in the Army anymore.

The WO recruiters I talk to tell me to enlist in another MOS first, then apply.

The officer recruiters I talk to, tell me to commission into another branch first, then apply.

I would advise you to do neither! If you want into WOFT then apply for WOFT.

Enlisting and applying to WOCS at least makes sense. Most people going into WOCS come from the enlisted ranks.

Commissioning into another branch and doing a branch transfer to aviation? I'm not going to say it is unheard of, but it's pretty dang close. Besides, no matter your commissioning source with the exception of a direct commission, (ROTC, West Point, OCS), you don't have much of a choice in what branch you'll get anyway. Essentially the better your scores the more likely you'll get your branch of choice.

So, the day before my battalion board was scheduled on 22 December, I was informed again that I would not be boarding due to a missing document from my security interview at MEPS. That was a bit of a bummer, I was pumped and ready, new hair cut and everything. I guess I'll just be even more ready for the next board.

On a side note, I haven't really seen any of those "Hey, I was Just Accepted" posts lately. ..........haha I think I'm psyching myself out with all of this free time and waiting. I hope I have good news after my battalion board on 12 June, 2010.

After a few hiccups, I finally boarded for my WOFT packet this morning. I was approved and told they don't do the 25/25 anymore by some guy but I'm not sure if that correct. The interview was very ODD, haha. I believe they tried some mind games on me haha. But in the end they said we're going to give you this chance and approve this packet, so that's all that matters to me. Wish me luck for the USAREC on the 8th of Feb.

Be careful who you say that around, the Kiowa guys are pretty defensive of their aircraft, and pretty gung ho.
btw, you need to type and hand write your essay, and include both copies

140 AFAST
GT on my ASVAB was passing...cant remember the score exactly

I am waiting on a flight physical and PFT but what I am worried about are my LORs. I am going to request them from the chief pilot where I work, one or two college professors, a colleague, and 2 of my students that have both served in the military. Do you think these LORs would be adequate? I don't know any army aviators personally so these people are the best I can get.
