Why Purdue is the best flight school around

Well, I was reading Mike's post about how Purdue doesn't PR enough (From ages ago, but hey, it's Monday night in Lafayette....)

And after some consideration, I have determined that Purdue does in fact have the best flight school in the country because of one thing, and one thing alone.

Division 1 (A) football.

And before you WMU boys start yakking on and on like you're really in a legitimate conference... Look at your schedule this year and see how it compares to ours.

Football season, the nicest season of the year in Lafayette, is soon to begin, with most of our starters coming back from last year (save Orton and Stubby), and a relatively favorable schedule (however not as creampuff-laden as WMU's).

Anyone else psyched about this season? Remember last year, before the fiasco, how great it was being undefeated?

Also, I'm curious (in order to keep this somewhat on an aviation-related item), how many of you couldn't care less about football and continue with their regular saturday flight slot during gamedays? Anyone have any idea as to how many of the flight kids actually do that?

Well when we only post twice a year, it's pretty easy to catch things before they get out of hand

Oh, comeon, everybody here knows that the Broncos suck. They were good (relatively) a few years ago, but in the middle of the '01 season the star QB got hurt and I'm not sure if they even won a single game the rest of that season. Every season since they have been getting worse. The MAC isn't that bad, definitely not the Big 10(12?). However, I do have some personal issues w/ the '01 NIU team/coaches...

When MAC teams play Big 10 teams in post season games, who wins most of the time? I thought BGSU came up over Northwestern a year or two back, and the same thing happened this year. The Big 10 isn't all that, though. Michigan got stomped by Texas and USC in the last two Rose Bowls (and before you say at least they went to the Rose Bowl, it happens by default, a Big 10 team almost has to go). We don't even need to discuss what happened to your team. Michigan State still sucks, Wisconsin had a good run and Ohio State got lucky that they were able to beat Michigan in the last game of the year.

Our team sucks, it happens. We were ranked 24th in 2000 and now we're 116th. Our program took a serious nosedive and now we suck, it happens. We'll come back on the upswing. Don't talk too much trash, because I noticed your team went from number two to number what this year?

Give me a few pages, I could go on and on about Big 10 fans.

Wow, you're citing ONE bowl game 2 years ago (with the BEST team in the MAC versus the SEVENTH best team in the Big 10) as a good example of the Big 10 not being great?

Purdue lost 5 games last year, by a combined 20 points. And if we would've won the Wisconsin game, we probably would be national champions right now.

MAC fans are quite possibly the most disillusioned in college football (nothing personal, it just seems like every fan of a MAC team thinks that they're in the Big 12 or SEC or something). I've listened to Miami of Ohio fans complain that they weren't in the national championship game after dominating teams like Northern Illinois and Central Florida. The thing is, if you only play directional schools, then you're not going to be seriously considered for anything...

I know you said WMU has taken a dive, but them you laugh at us from dropping from number two to number twenty-five? Come on. Has WMU ever even cracked the top 5? Your team dropped from 24th from the top to third from the bottom. And look at how miserable your schedule is. You play games against Buffalo (one of the three worse teams than your own), Temple (a team that got kicked out of their division because they were so bad) and Ball State (a team Purdue beat last year by FIFTY POINTS). Purdue, with its easiest schedule ever, is playing 7 teams in the top 50. Had we gotten to play Michigan and OSU this year, we would have had 9 in the top 50...

Big 10 football is some of the best in the country... The reason you don't see so many national championships is that the division is stacked from top to bottom, and running the table is really difficult, unlike in the SEC or Big XII some years.

Looks to me like MAC teams and Big Ten teams went to 5 and 6 bowl games respectivally, and Big Ten teams only won one more bowl game that MAC teams. Akron almost made it to a bowl game this last year but needed one more win to put them solidly in that terrority.

The MAC isn't a bad conference. Not a powerhouse either. What MAC fans get pissed off about is the lack of respect that our teams get. Miami of Ohio, BGSU and Toledo belong playing with the upper level teams in the Big 10 a lot more than IU and Northwestern do if you ask me. NIU and Western Michigan used to be in those positions also, though as I say again we've taken a nosedive. The coaching staff that produced that result has been fired finally. That should have happened a while ago if you ask me, when we still had a team to salvage. Name me another program that has gone from top 25 to the second to last team in the country. I think we should be dead last if you ask me, our program blows. But we're rebuilding it and it will take some time before we're good again. You see we have to do it with these things called budget cuts, which Big 10 schools don't seem to know about. Western Michigan is 7th on the list of funding for Michigan public university's, but we grand the third most diplomas every year. Long story short we're getting screwed, but it's nothing new to tell you the the truth. It happens in a lot of aspects at Western, from funding to the president of the university screwing over the students to our football team sucking.

Oh, and by the way; we have to play directional schools because they're in our conference. We don't want to play Eastern Michigan because they're a great football program, they're in our conference.

Let's review:
MAC teams win solidly over MEMPHIS and TROY

MAC teams lose TO CONNECTICUT. They've been in 1A for two years! A domination by Cincinnati, and Iowa State (who was...7th in the Big XII).

Meanwhile the Big 10 loses to (# 19) Arizona State in a close close game, Georgia (#7) by 3 and #4 Texas by one, in the best Rose Bowl in recent history.

If you want to say that the MAC would've done just as well facing those teams, fine. But I want at least two of whatever it is you're drinking :-D

I'll duck out of this one, I see that I'm not getting anywhere and that you're like most people that go to Big 10 schools.

Glad I go to a MAC school so I don't have to hang with folks like you.

I'm just saying that when you play a higher caliber of opponents, you can't expect to go 11-1 and things.

Glad I go to a Big 10 school where people are taught to think rather than mindlessly knee-jerk . Fact of the matter is, every school with more than 10k people or so is pretty much the same... The only thing that might differ are male/female ratio and depending on the school, average SAT scores. There are going to be the jerks, the idiots, and the people who don't realize that if their conference was legit, they'd have an automatic BCS bid

Relax, it's just football.

So, what exactly does a good football team (or a bad one for that fact) have to do with "the best flight school around?" It's like me saying Skymates is the best because the Texas Rangers are winning......

My intentions were to throw a snazzy header to drag people into this forum and post, however, I do (sort of) have a point here.

I think we can all agree that primary training is more or less the same at every school in the known US (yes yes yes there are exceptions), and that certain schools have niches for secondary training (See the publicity thread)... But I think (speaking from my own experience) that Purdue is the only "major" flight program at a major university. I'm aware that lots of schools (two of the three OSUs, KSU, Illinois) and others have flight programs, but most of them are either 1) not run by the school, 2)very separated from campus (ASU East is 20 miles from ASU) or 3)very insignificant in size.

Think about other aviation schools (UND and ERAU specifically, nothing personal, but when you're some of the best, you're going to be the target of some criticism )... Would any of you ever go to those schools to major in something non-aviation related? (If that's even possible at ERAU). Chances are, probably not, unless you're just a huuuge fan of the GFK winters

Being a major university offers some diversity to the student body here at Purdue, and honestly, to the average Joe who knows *nothing* about aviation, a Purdue degree probably has a bit more prestige than a UND degree... Not to say that it really does, but a lot of people know of Purdue and think it's either 1) private or 2) ivy-league [yeah... I know ]... But honestly, the football program helps PR Purdue.

Anyway, I digress. The point of this thread was to have a little fun discussion, not one of those "take ourselves far too seriously and make this thread a peeing contest between schools".

The title of this thread might as well have been, "Hey everybody, want to see how big my balls are? They're huge, we're talking about twenty pounders here." Then you picked out another school (mine specifically) and said "And yours aren't as big."

I mean that's all we're talking about here when it gets down to it.

If I had it to do over again, I'd finish my degree on the cheap back at Mississippi State instead of with ERAU. And actually, the girl that gave me the tour at DAB was a computer science major. Spending $10K a semester for a computer science degree was just blowing my mind......

As far as UND, I think they're a state school that happens to have an aviation program. I'm sure a lot of people that live and are originally from North Dakota (yes, they exist!) go there for other degrees than aviation.

How many defensive linemen at Purdue are in the flight program? Makes about as much sense, huh?

Yup. The school has about 13,000 students of which about 1,800 or so are aviation majors.

Wow dude, relax. I never said "Because I'm in a good school I'm better than *everyone* else"... You're overreacting immensely. I said your school's football team wasn't as good as ours. Do you realize how minute that is in the grand scheme of things? This was supposed to be a lighthearted thread and you blew it into WMU vs. Purdue round 1 loser dissolves their university.
